slipping through cracks?
« on: November 10, 2011, 07:59:47 am »

can FUN enter water diagonal DOWN? I'm building a wall over a murky pool, so the Z level below is water. Can they enter it slipping through the crack between the wall they face and the ground they stand on?

Actually, I think you'll find the answer to be 'no.'

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I'm just posting my next question here... If i reach my population max, do i still get babies but no migrants, or neither?

as it is, I'm fine with about 80 pop, a third is usually idle, so next time i think of putting it under my (current) 200, which would make this a bit hard to manage

Once the population cap is reached you will not get immigrants.

There is a separate child population cap that prevents new dwarves from being born.

When the children grow up you can overshoot the population cap by HUNDREDS of dwarves as every child grown up is replaced by a newborn one. There are people who have built their entire fort around this idea of generations.

I have no idea if children count towards the population cap. Like if the cap is 80 but you have 65 adults and 15 children. Do you get immigrants? I have no idea.

I'm fairly sure that children and babies do not count towards the cap.

I must say once you reach the cap, you will not get many more migrants. Example:

Your pop cap is 35. Current population is 38. You increase the cap to 40. Season or so, the wave of migrants: 3. Season or so later, four more migrants show up. Gradually increasing the number will tend to swing you three or five dwarves higher than the init figure. I guess I look at it as if, in our example, seven set out,  but half of 'em straggled on the way. I am under the impression population cap includes all children and adults.

The init entry for children gives the choice of an absolute limit or percentage-of-adult-population.
