Let’s play Evil Genius!
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:21:45 pm »

Reading these topics made me want to make one.

Let us play Evil Genius with the following premises:
1) We are not going to have modified population file. Sure, the 100 personnel limit is a little tight, and we are going to constantly need to change the number of these or those henchmen, but it’s going to be both manageable and fun.
2) We are going to build one-square-wide rooms. Because I think it’s stupid that we can’t. Besides, I think the two-square limit was actually put there to prevent the problem, which one-square room solves (namely — access to crucial hotspots). Together with that, of course, comes the idea of super-efficient use of space, which I think is awesome.
3) Hard level. (Probably not going to survive halfway through Island 2, but, hey, why not?)

Besides that, all hell breaks loose.

Minion names are mixed and matched at random from a list of possible first names and last names, I can add names of your choice to the pool of those names. I can also rename henchmen in your honour, if you should so desire.

Evil Genius is a brilliant game, I must say.

My vote goes to starting with Alexis. I find her bigger aura makes her more useful. Set up a trap cascade entry corridor; nothing hurty, just a few bends with wind machines, to get a decent chain going. Maybe a few dead ends with traps hurting the yellow and purple attributes.

No to fake entrances, and no to a tiered base; putting stuff that generates heat in otherwise unheated rooms is a good way to regen some more stats, and adds fun.

Whisk some agents for me!

Oh... I forgot to mention that I don’t want to exploit the maid, but... oh, well, that was stupid of me, so now we have that: can exploit the maid to get as much money as we want without having any agents after us. However, beware the second island money limit (it glitches out and you get corrupted interface every time you move to the island with more than 8 or 12 million, can’t remember which).

However, it happens that names can be edited. Unfortunately it works like that: a separate file for first names, and a separate file for last names. The get mixed and matched at random, so anyone who wants can have their first name and last name of choice in the pool and have a chance at a minion or agent. Remember, that female names are only used for agents of justice, minions are all male.

Oh boy, glitch exploitation! Tell me more, oh wise master of abuse of game mechanics that make no sense in real life!

In other words, don't abuse glitches.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Can you tweak the names of Henchmen? If so, I would like to claim Lord Kane (assuming you pick Shen-Yu or recruit him further on in the game).

Also, play with the unofficial patch, that fixes some things and lets you do some interesting stuff, like building sentryguns and hotels underground. The former isn't quite as good as it sounds, since agents will still open fire or blow them up on sight, requiring some micro-management, plus they shoot (non-lethally) people who are being moved to an interrogation chamber.

Do note that that patch does raise the population cap to 150, so you'll have to tweak that back.

Or not, if it will make the game easier for you to play.  Player fustration is the leading cause of death of LPs.

I dug around, and it so happens, that I actually can change henchmen names. So Myroc gets to be Lord Kane.

Add my name to the pool!

First name EuchreJack and last name Euchre added to the pool of available names. If you want a henchman, sorry to have Lord Kane gone, but there are still guys left to rename. =) I'll keep track of these things in a spoiler in the first post of the thread.

An update to name technique. The devs didn’t make it overly complicated, and decided that they would control the frequency of a name appearing by entering it multiple times into the name pool. So, let’s say you can pull one name out of a thousand, but inside that thousand there’s 20 “Dave” and only one “Franklin”.

So I'll use the same method to boost the chanced of any bay-12'ers. Considering that minions are prone to dying, sometimes at the hands of the evil genius...

I'd like to have the name Fikes added to the last names, please.

Good luck with the LP.

I vote freezer has to be near the entrance for extra FUN.

Ooh, this should be fun. I'll vote for making it tough, namely:

1) Avoid maze entrances. It's no fun when no agents ever reach your actual base thanks to limited AI.
2) Avoid multiple dead ends. See above.  :P
3) A two-tiered base might be interesting, though. I always ended up packing my barracks with loot objects, which kinda defeated the whole point of low-heat rooms; it'd be interesting to see someone make use of them!  :D

* Also, one extra suggestion: How about emphasizing combat over social minions? We're already on Hard difficulty, so this might make it too tough... but it's far more awesome to cut down agents in a barrage of gunfire than to shine their shoes and take silly photographs of them.  ::)
(And no to abusing the maid. Because exploiting boring glitches to make the game easier is no fun!)
