Problem with hatchlings
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:18:38 pm »

I've started embarking with 1 Hen and 1 Rooster.
Allows me to get a solid amount of eggs and a steady food supply later on.
I'm having a problem though, My chicks when born will fight each other constantly.
I've seen this happen with dogs, but in cases I've had my rooster kill off some of the baby chicks.
Any solution to remedy this?

Build a cage and stuff all the chicks into it.

Or assign the chicks a pasture seperate from the rooster.

Don't let your rooster near the babies?  Make sure they all have enough room?

I usually use turkeys, but the same situation exists. I put the hen in a 3x3 room with a nest box and locked door. That gives enough space to avoid too much fighting when they hatch, but then I also move the poults to a larger pasture to give them more room. Putting them in a cage until they mature would probably be even better, since they apparently don't fight in cages. Once they become adults, I kill most of the gobblers and keep the hens for eggs. I keep a couple of gobblers so I can make more fertile eggs to increase the flock.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Ugh, Why didn't I think of this.
So chicks will mature in cages?

Yep. I keep a nifty little stockpile of turkeys that way. Birds don't need to eat yet, so there's no worry about them starving.

Why don't you dig them a bigger room?

If the dwarfs get small rooms, why would the chickens get it any better.

you dont stuff the idiots with 10 in a 3x3 room either, right? anyway, its the wonderful way of the world that chicks will fight in a 3x3 room, but not in a 1x1 cage
