Come to think of it, this would explain the world's missing sock problem.

Yup. It's that one in that middle of nowhere disgusting gas station, in the stall that is completely putrid. Those aren't shit smudges, it's beard residue!

I assume this sock is important because it is the only sock in the fortress.  That and it's a monkey sock... All the non-married dwarfs are fighting over the sock so they can each "have their turn" with it?

That incident was really what clued me in to the depth this game can offer, though that one time I made a fort of 150 dwarves suspended over a gorge and cut it all loose was pretty fun too.
