Second, blurb:
Quote from: From website
Vapors of Insanity is a roguelike game set on a paradise island of Fortarica, where the common Humans, mighty Dwarves and Orcs, insect-like Melissans and Formicans, and many more people lived in peace and harmony... until now. One day, you wake up, and see magical fog everywhere around you, and every man and beast around seems to become a mindless machine, wanting only to kill you! The only way to find the source of the problem is to fight the crazy beasts, hoping that you will find a way to remove the vapors, and the beasts will be sane again... Will you be able to win?

Spoiler: Feature List (click to show/hide)

Third, why the hell you should care: My last character melted three people and a number of miscellaneous animals via spewing out a massive spray of acid that covered my entire field of vision, before dying to a kobold, giant mutated eye, and a pair of giant lizards -- the massive amount of acid I covered them in melts slow :P

My current character is wandering around the countryside viciously murdering everything he comes across with a dagger-inflicted spell that covers my foes in flashfrozen liquid air, then using his artificer trained skill in creating golems to reanimate the corpses as zombies, spreading a slowly growing swarm of undead minions before, behind, and around him.

Short version: Incredibly versatile and awesome magic system that lets you freely mix and match component spells into whatever strikes your fancy, elemental interaction (water+frost=snow, which is frost but longer lasting and more damaging, lightning does more damage to creatures covered in water, etc.), detailed (or at least complicated, ha) crafting system including weapon, armor, and potion creation, golem creation, and a number of other things I haven't personally seen yet, and a pretty well fleshed out skill system for an alpha.

Lastly, the warning. As a DF player to other DF players, the UI for this thing is DF level horrible, or at least horribly clunky. Using a skill is going to take at least four keypresses, possibly more. Example, casting a spell -- the quick and easy way, with a simple spell -- 'f z <number> enter enter'. Melee attacking is the only thing that happens in one button press, and that's only if you're attacking something directly in front of you -- attacking to the sides takes (at least) three (a 1 enter). There's facing and it takes a (small) bit of time to change your direction, so that can be pretty important in a particularly pitched battle.

First thing that I recommend: Before starting the game, go into vapors.ini and change 'hex' to 'oct'; this'll change the view to a standard grid, which is a bit easier to look at, imo. One you start the game, press 'n enter g 2 enter' (otherwise known as starting a new game and firing up the tutorial), then hit enter and go through the tutorial. It helps tremendously in figuring what the blue hell you need to do to get from point A to point B and spew out a zombie horde. The tutorial also gives a pretty good idea of whether you're going to be able to stomach the game or not, hopefully saving y'some time if your reaction's negative..

Finally, it's an alpha -- very feature filled for one, but an alpha nonetheless, so various problems may or may not arise.

Anyway, check this thing out, see what neat crap you can do, then come back and discuss. This seems to be something that's right up a DF player's alley.

to reanimate the corpses as zombies, spreading a slowly growing swarm of undead minions before, behind, and around him.
This alone had me sold on the idea. Need to go to bed... damnit!

Edit: And by ACID, I thought you meant illegal drugs. Man, I'm tired.

This is an understatement.

I might start this again but just playing the tutorial was rather awkward.

Nothing nasty to the code, the dev is a standup guy and actively posting on Roguetemple and hoping for as much feedback from as many players as can be managed so he can identify and address the issues for said playerbase so the game can improve and ascend to be one of the Major Greats like DCSS and the others with that kind of scope/heft.

Download page doesn't mention anything, but I don't have access to a linux machine, hum. Site says it's been compiled on a 64-bit Ubuntu machine, but doesn't give any more information. Try and find out?

I didn't need anything to compile it on Sabayon. Just remember to run it with
Code: [Select]
$ make CCEV=linux
And either the ASCII version by appending DOASCII=1 to that, or the SDL version by using DOSDL=1

This game is quite fun so far, but is indeed also very clunky.

Case in point, he noticed the thread here today and thus:

Unfortunately I have not worked much on VoI recently, due to lack of time (I have worked a bit on my other roguelike projects though, Necklace of the Eye + Hydra Slayer, and Hyperbolic Rogue which seems to have turned out to be much more popular than I expected). Still, I have made some progress, and since there is currently a discussion on Bay 12 Games Forum about VoI, I have decided that I should release what I have instead of waiting until I have time to develop more. I am quite tired now, but I hope nothing is seriously broken.

OK, so the changelog for Version 0.53 follows...

When you try to start a new game, you are told that you should try the tutorial, and how.
You can now have several saved games, and see a list of them. Also this works in a more logical manner now.
Playerfiles (*.apf) are now correctly linked to saved games (universe files, *.auh): their names now include universe names (to avoid collision) and are deleted together with them.
    Four directional movement works now.
You can now select geometry (four-directional, hex, eight-directional) from the main menu.
Input is now configurable. Currently you can switch to VI keys, and have more or less confirmations.
Provided icons for vortices, vests and armors, skills, usages, actions, potions and elements, etc.
Rune of Draining, which allows you to cast spells from sources other than your own mana.
Spell of Charging, Spell of Zap.
Rune of Anchoring has been renamed to Spell of Tagging, and is now a spell that can be cast at enemies (but also resisted).
Improved the balance for the "spray" spell.
Diaries are more frequent now, and they have a random thing/monster picture on their covers.
The ordering in the list of actions ('?') is better now.
Runes no longer work on non-spells.
Fixed bug with melting doors with locks.
Fixed missing parameters for some potions.
Sponge spell now can steal potions from inside vials and dragon breath.
    Fixed designs. Fixed chasm arrows.
Fixed a bug with stacking target signs which caused stack overflow.

Technical:

Priority assigner in VaporGS. For now, used for initializer scripts, but all method priorities are planned to use it.
    Shift+F2 thoroughly analyzes icons now.
Internal icon names are more standarized now.
Wishing cheat improved. Can generate specific books, or bottles and cauldrons with specific potions now.
Asking for a VaporGS symbol (mQSymbol) improved.
Books are now methplexes as everything else.

Managed to compile it on Linux, but vapors.ini seems to not change anything.

I have an issue that the tutorial does not tell me how to move. I can not figure out how to go north to that second tutorial rune :(

No idea about that, maybe you are trying to change the geometry while the game that has been already started in another geometry. Anyway, in the new version you can also change the geometry without editing vapors.ini (by pressing 4, 6, or 8 before you press "n" to start a new game).

You can move using numpad. If you have no numpad (e.g. because are on a laptop), you can try to turn on the VI keys (press '=' for options, and then select VI keys in the input configuration) and then you can do diagonal movement (or vertical movement in the hex mode) with yubn. You can also use the mouse. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the interest!

Yeah, I figured out how to change it in the menu. Also, VI keys. Yay.

The game is interesting in concept, but I agree with the opening statement that the interface is horrible. I had trouble even getting through the tutorial, it just takes so many button presses to do anything (like look through things in your inventory.) I'll have to give it another chance soon, I feel asleep while playing it last night xD

Could be worse, at least you don't have to use 'M-x look-inventory' to access your inventory :P
