Wont the river start to fill up again once the resivoar is filled?

Any thoughts on how this can be abused?

Diary of Noodle0117

Winter is approaching, although I doubt it will really get cold enough to be called an actual winter.
The fort is certainly in much better shape than it was when I first came, although it still needs a bit touching up in terms of decoration and wealth.
The river damming project went along a lot more smoothly than I expected, good thing too especially since we lack the numbers to make up for any mistakes that could have happened.

I think it would only be suitable if I record how I managed to carry out this task in case anyone else in the future might want to do the same.

First, I gave orders to dig a sizable trench beneath the source side of the river.

Second, I ordered the engravers to smooth out some water passing fortifications at the edge of the territory.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How these fortifications enable an infinite amount of water to drain out is beyond my comprehension, but all I need to know is that it works.

Third, I order a row of floodgates built so that we can control when we want the river to drain or not.

Fourth, for faster draining, I've ordered a trench to be dug out from beneath the middle of the river. This trench is then diverted to the original draining device so that it doesn't flood up right away.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fifth, I've ordered the masons to construct a thin stone pathway right over the trenches that were dug out earlier. These will later be linked up to supports and levers and will eventually be used to punch out holes in the river that will allow the water to drain.

Sixth, I pull the lever.

And watch the show

The ghosts seemed a tad bit disturbed that I washed their former bodies off the face of the map, but I'll just engrave a few slabs to satisfy them.

All the future overseers need to do is to pull that left lever in the multicolored room to unleash the river's fury.

It's getting late and I should rest.

And my turn is over.
Nothing of interest happened in the winter, so I'm just uploading the save here and now.
Twas a pain to upload without a proper proxy on this computer. China doesn't like foreign websites.

Ha! You actually did it! I'm both amused and impressed - very dwarfy indeed. This will make trap-planning a lot easier... I don't think Whispers has much to worry about. :P Awesome turn. :)

Can I sign up?  I've been playing around with impractical cave-in traps. Try impractical cave-in traps: any trap can be improved with an impractical cave-in!

Also, could I have a lay down on what levers go where e.t.c?
*Edit 2, should I risk the caverns to obtain the lovely magma? Group of pond grabberers just 'chillin somewhere, could be a workshop nightmare :/

Caverns completely sealed!

Edit 3

Goblins have pretty much ended the fort. Should I continue and try to wall the remaining dwarves inside?

If there is magma in the caverns you should definitely brave them. I usually go the elaborate trap route for caverns anyway cause of the F.B. [trap_avoid]/deadly dust.

1. If in doubt as to what a lever does, pull it.
2. The cat haz magics. Tell it to get itself out of there. If it's a witch, it'll get out and you can kill it for heresy. If it's not a witch and it can't get out, you're fine. Make sure you wait an appropriate length of time (6-9 months) to be sure it's not a witchcat.
3. I say... MAGMAAAAAAAAAA. 8D Must have. Must have!

I purposely placed the cat there as a sentry watchout for goblin thieves and ambushers.
It can't be touched by goblins unless they manage to get a lucky shot via crossbow.

The levers should be all Noted.

But for better clarification, the 7 levers at the far left of the fort near the water draining place are used to turn on and off the river draining device.

Already mentioned this in my last fort update post, but in the screenshot below:

the left lever in the red/blue/yellow room opens the bridges that keep the river held back, and the right lever in the room open the bridges to the right which are used to drain water from the middle of the river.

Well, he's got another succession game. Let's give the old boy a bit of slack.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.
