I'm Training Like A Masochist (And You're Invited!)
« on: November 06, 2011, 08:41:57 pm »

I'm about to start on a batshit insane training regime this winter to drop my 3200m time from 10:46 to 9:46. I'll be running and lifting and whatnot all winter, so this is going to be a thing for a while.

I'm inviting all of you Baywatchers out there to join in with me and do some kind of exercise thing this winter. We can talk about it here and give each other tips. Sounds like fun, right?

I'll start: My current plan is to run 1,000+ miles this winter and lift weights so that my arm swings actually help me when I run. Does anyone have good ideas for speed workouts? (Bearing in mind that my 'kick' will be about half a mile?)

We have theme music!

Fairly unfit guy here, I was thinking about starting up walking again, I'd probably jog too but I'm used to warmer temperatures and for some reason South Carolina gets rather cold over the winter despite being pretty far south. I probably also need to improve my diet, apparently I'm pretty well set for a heart attack before I'm 21.

I'd like to say I'm definitely going to be doing even that, but I honestly can't say I'm going to leave my computer for long enough. I'm an addict.

Nice idea. I would like to join in, or at least try. I definitely need to get in better shape anyway. Since I'm pretty much at point zero again, I guess I'll have to start with making promises of starting walking and and jogging in the old track, and try to at least get be able to run it all around again.

I can't offer much help to others, though, as I hardly know anything about training (turns out ignoring my phys ed lessons was a bad thing, who would've guessed), but I would still appreciate advice from others more experienced.

I also need to get my leg-aches checked out, regardless of whether I actually follow through with any exercise or not. Oh, and hope for a snowless winter.

We have theme music!

Good choices, but not the best.  This goes with everything, but it goes with training montages best of all.

Well, I'm sort of doing this. Not devoting myself to it but not making excuses either. Something I've found that, while maybe not as effective as jogging/running or even walking fast, using punching backs really fast seems to be a good workout. I sweated a bunch and went through two water bottles, just from thirst while using one for 1-3 hours. The good thing is I don't get exhausted from my lungs or pains in my sides that I usually get when I do normal cardio. Swimming works but using a punching bag is easier than taking the time to go to a pool.

Not physical fitness, but "training like a masochist" sounds about right for what I'm doing.

This winter break I'm going to work through Rudin and Munkres, starting Spivak, Arnold, and Cartan's books on analysis and differential equations.  I'm also working through at least the second semester of Russian, if not more.

That's about all I'll be doing for the entire break, too.  *sigh*

Hey, this sounds like a good way to motivate myself. I try to do plenty of exercise, but it's hard to get motivated, especially where I live at the moment.
Perhaps I'll even join a gym, although I don't really have the cash at the moment. Still, I'm in!

More like the 3 liter of coke and bag of Oreos a night diet.

Oh what fun that is. Quick way to gain winter weight.

Not my most preferred method, but always an option.

If the way you study for math is anything like the way I study for math, you are going to be awesome at melting pennies with your focused glare. (I sit there and stare harder and harder at math problems until I figure them out. I like to imagine I'm starting them down.)

But yeah, you're invited, too! So's that hedonist guy, if he's willing to keep it up.  ;D

Some of the most important information to know.

You don't need an expensive gym and fancy machines. If I did bother with a gym, I'd only use it for the option for dumbbells and freeweights of all shapes and sizes.

As it stands, do yourself a favor and get adjustable dumbbells from a place like walmart or online. You can get everything you need for for a pair for less than $60 and over 50 pounds per side. That's less than a month or two at a gym.

Check out the far right sidebar in http://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/ for more do-it-yourself awesomeness.

You sure about that Kael? Since I'm looking to get fit again, and I've been doing some crossfit before, but it seems pretty hard to find something solid that I can adhere to. Also, the hell does the first number mean?
