I would train myself like a masochist, but I get so flummoxed about how best to go about exercising that I never do anything.

Buy/pirate the books "Starting Strength: Basic barbell training 3rd edition" by Mark Rippetoe and "Practical programming for strength training 2nd edition" by Mark Rippetoe & Lon Kilgore. Read Everything in Starting Strength and read most of Practical programming (If you're new there's no reason to look into intermediate or advanced training). Once you've done that, you will know absolutely everything you'll need to know and much, much more.

I simply cannot recommend these books enough.

I'm going to go get myself a sledgehammer and a tire and do some caveman training once I clear up the Untamed Wilds biome in the back yard.

Be careful to leave the hanging vines. Those are great for working upper body strength.

I don't know if there are any, what with this being a northern temperate zone, but if I see some I'll let you know.

Jesus, I forgot about this topic completely. I've been trying to keep up, but my back is just killing me lately. Probably gravity finally catching up. All I know is my lats and delts are burning like they're pumping napalm lately, and it's not nice at all. I don't even work those as hard as I used to, sigh.

Then again, I am getting abs again. Probably just me losing weight though, I've been on a pretty lean meal regiment lately, mostly from a lack of appetite.

My training is indeed masochistic.

I'm weaning myself off of caffiene. (Stupid withdrawal symptoms. TEH PAINZ IN MAH HAED!)

Mmmmh, soon I'll join in the masochistic pain. I'm currently studying for my finals, but then I'll have 2 short weeks before heading to South Dakota for an internship on a ranch, and I'll need to get back in shape. I'm thinking lots of swimming/running/cycling, mostly for endurance, as I guess this is what I'll need the most on the ranch.

Hullo workout thread. I've been lifting weights lately, to get to my goal of being able to do pushups, which I figure will be a decent launching point to general physical fitness without having to spend money on an expensive exercise machine or a YMCA membership. Now for a while I was doing bicep curls, only to find out the bicep isn't terribly important to the part I was having trouble with. (actually pushing myself off the ground).

So I started doing Lying triceps extensions. It's been going well enough, BUT, when I do them, once I get past 5-10 reps or so my elbow kinda stings. It's not too bad, and it's not preventing me from actually doing the exercise, but it hurts enough to make me think I MAY be doing something wrong and inadvertently injuring my elbow. Should I start with a smaller weight, and work back up to my current weight, (about 16 pounds per dumbell if I recall, the smaller ones are just tiny plastic ones, like, 3 pounds each or somethin) or is elbow pain expected?

Thanks in advance if any of ya know.

EDIT: Changed barbell to dumbell because yeah I'm not lifting two barbells. :P

Then you're not training like a masochist! :P

If your elbows sting a bit it shouldn't be an issue. Muscles tend to feel strained if you don't use them often. If it continues with smaller weights then there might be something wrong.

Yeah, it's fine with smaller weights. There's less of pain, but still some. Doesn't really factor into anything though, whereas the metal dumbell does kinda make me stop for a minute every now and then. I think I'll work a bit more on the lighter weights and see if that helps any with the heavier weights. Thanks! :D

Bleh. I don't have anywhere to work out. I need to get my own place, like, a year ago.

So masochists, I have begun working out more in order to become more fit. Not a gym membership or anything, just ab exercises and psuhups. I still have osme questions though.

So I have been drinking 4-5 cups of milk a day, which at 12 grams of sugar puts me over the daily recomended intake of sugar. Now I know that is bad, but Men's fitness says milk helps build muscle (which really only reinforces my habit), so I was wondering if you think that makes up for the increased sugar intake?

Also does anyone know of any good leg exercies, that don't take too long? IE, not running/walking.

Running doesn't take too long if you go fast enough.  :P Maybe that's some motivation for you.

Aside from that, maybe try some leg-based lifting. (I have no idea about lifting. I just run.)

Lunges are probably up your alley. They burn and it's not too tough, just remember to do it often otherwise it's a bit useless. Easy to do before bed or some such, add weights to increase the effect [like any workout].

How effective would it be without the wieghts?
