Some easy to implement suggestions
« on: November 06, 2011, 01:32:52 pm »

1. Alphabetize the language raws. I know it doesn't actually have any effect on the game, but it would make customizing names so much more convenient when you're not stuck wondering if "conflict" is in the c's or at the bottom of the menu.
2. Fixing the male elf queen/princess thing.
3. Including more (aka useful) information into the help menu. Not all of us have on-demand access to the Wiki required to play the game. Perhaps Toady or Threetoe could do some copy-pasting?

(Yes, footkerchief, I do realize that somebody made a thread about the language files. It's in general discussion, and includes alphabetized raw files. I made a new thread about it because suggestions belong in the suggestion board. While I'm thinking about it though does anyone know if Toady's added new words to the racial languages since '07? I'm just going to download them if they're not out-of-date.)

You wouldn't rush Goya or Faulkner or Tarantino. Think about Toady as equal to those artists. And then deal with it.

1. ctrl+f ?

3. If you have a computer, you very likely have the possibility to access the internet, don't you? Even if not, an offline version of the wiki would serve your needs adequately and wouldn't take up precious programming time.

Just post the link to the other discussion...

Casts dont respect gender?

Yeah Elves calling both male and female royals Princesses and Queens doesn't seem like a bug to me. It just sounds like in their language there is no word for "King" it is just Queen. If there was a male who was Queen. They would be called a "Male Queen" at best.

A somewhat Similar situation in real life would be the word "Nurse" where a male nurse was called a "Male Nurse" while a female nurse was called a "Nurse".

The other reason is that perhaps their term for the ruler of a kingdom is a femanine word and thus the more accurate translation is "Queen" rather then deciding it based on gender.

In otherwords as I said. I don't consider the fact that Elves use Princess and Queen for both genders to be a glitch or bug... even if it turns out I am wrong (which is likely)

You can, but you can't access the Wiki - just the skeletal ingame help menu. But how long would it take to copypaste the most important parts of the Wiki (the tutorials maybe, or the farming and smelting guides) into the real help system?

Unfortunately, you're wrong despite that very logical conclusion. In the raws the position of Queen and Princess are marked [GENDER:FEMALE] or similar. A tag exclusive to these elven nobles.

Can we make it a feature somehow? It is cool albiet extremely jarring.

What does AKA stand for, also known as?  Or was that supposed to be AFK useful?  *shrug*

Revealing too much of the guts removes the FUN.  That is a fine line, to walk.  But its not one that can't be traveled with more clarity of purpose and ease of use.  *thumb up*  I'd love the info on trap linking and timing to be included, especially as it pertains to the machines.  I'd also sell my kingdom for a color code key to the Forbidden F, in the Stock lists.  Sometimes its bright yellow, other times its a brownish yellow.  That means something right?  Also, a graphical timeline, comparing my civie to the others, in population, credits, and politics/reputation, roads, and offerings, in the civie list would be great, instead of having to tab around in there to see stuff like a P, for lord only knows what, that mean Peace?  I dunno.  But a variable key in that window itself, would be wonderful to see, and take little to know no coding.  I'm right there with you Urist, on this request.  Good one!

Sincerely,
Knutor

Thank you for clearing that abbreviation up for me.

I giggle when people tell me to 'just look in the raws.'  It makes me think of shark dentistry.  Don't ask.  LOL!  I'm not one of them, but I would imagine some of the more hardcore gamers would call doing that, shark dentistry, as a kind of cheat, or a meta cheat.  As in, we might in our examination, of the raws, stumble over a greater-game altering knowledge, reducing game replayability.  I dunno,

I'm not one of them hard core gamers.  I do like surprises, and a good reason to be a dumbie.  That's why I always avoid saying that; plus I can't say it without smiling.

Sincerely,
Knutor

FYI the difference between colors for the "F" you see in the stocks list tells you either all of {item} or only some of {item} are forbidden. Same with "D."

In what sense is the wiki required? I'll grant it's incredibly useful, but I can play perfectly fine for hours without a consult outside the game. Why not simply start pasting the pages of the wiki you frequently use into text files (if nothing else) so you have offline access?

Copying those pages into the game proper means that it's going to need to be verified as accurate, as well as requiring a lot more updating when a new build is released. And, when a major update comes out, where does the in-game help information come from? Does Toady wait a few weeks for the wiki to catch up, paste in the new info and release a whole new build now with in-game tutorials for x.x.x.x?
