The most dangerous thing of all
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:38:43 pm »

It doesn't lead to Fun.  You never see it coming.  You know it can happen, though sometimes, you don't think it could ever happen to you.  It strikes when you least expect it, or sometimes, when you act, but too late.  It has already struck, and your fort is lost.

It is a Game Crash.

I started a new fort today.  I was still on the starting seven, but the starting locale was pretty nice, I'd spent an hour digging out a nice bedroom design, got stockpiles going, a farm, and was carving out workshops.  All the dorfs had a bedroom, a bed, and a cabinet for each on the way.

I suddenly realize I didn't have seasonal autosave on, and I go to save the game.  "Well, let's just place that cabinet first."

Bam.  Crash.  And no saves.

This was the rare time--ONLY time--I never have.  And so of course, this happens.

It must have been a quantum cabinet and tore a hole through the space-time fabric of your world.

I just had this bizarre image of the dwarven version of 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' pop into my head. Augh... brain breakage.

Perhaps I'm simply the Chosen One of computer stability, but I don't think Dwarf Fortress has ever crashed for me, and I've played it for several hundred hours.

I have always waged war on the dreaded corrupted raws-crash. They crash the game without ever disclosing their source. Takes forever to figure out which one of my mods I fucked up. Recently I've gotten it fairly stable and disabled autosaves on my main DF folder, but it will still sometimes crash when saving a world after generation, or most commonly; when saving the game. Luckily then it's almost always after the save has been processed properly, so it apparently just crashes trying to return to the title screen.

Same, although it has crashed.

Generally from something I did to the raws, though.
