[33g] Goblins tossed down a 14-story deep pit occasional
« on: January 05, 2008, 02:13:00 pm »

I've had one goblin thief do this so far, and one military goblin. I didn't see the thief land, but was watching when the military goblin was tossed in, then zoomed down to the bottom and saw him land stunned, but completely unharmed.

Both goblins who have survived the fall so far were completely unharmed after landing.

On a non-buggy side note, the military goblin only got one space away before dying due to being turned into a *deer bone bolt* pincushion by an elite marksdwarf (who I had stationed there after the thief survived his fall).

Most of the goblins I've tossed into the pit have died on impact and shattered into their component parts, which fly all over the place and back up into the air. I'd say probably around 12 have died from a 14 story fall, and these are the first two to survive it.

(They were assigned to the pit while they were in cages which were sitting next to it. A dwarf comes over to the cage, takes them out, and tosses them in.)

Perhaps Lorien from Babylon 5 is hiding at the bottom of the pit, although I don't see why he would help goblins! :P

how do you designate a goblin to be taken out of a cage and then dumped into a pit?  i can only dump cages =-/

Use i to designate an open space area as a pit, first, then with it selected (in i), hit P, scroll through the list of critters and caged things to dump, and press enter to select things to be dumped into it.

But doesn't that run the risk of a dwarf "handling a dangerous creature"?  I thought they'd get scared and let whatever it was run rampant through the fort, or does that not work with goblins?

The dwarves don't seem to mind unless the goblin escapes, and so far I've only seen thieves and one crossbowgoblin escape. It might help that I've got the cages right next to the pit, but maybe not. I've seen dwarves leading a goblin up 14 flights of stairs and down a crowded hall without problems, so...

(And none of my dwarves have any animal handling skill above dabbling, if they even have it at all)

I have seen this kind of issue too.  In one fort I had a metric ton of animals running around causing lag, so I made a shaft like 10 levels deep, and a pit at the top.  I designated all the animals to be put there.   Most of them exploded on impact upon hitting the ground, however, once in a while one of them would land safely at the bottom.  I was wondering if there was some kind of mechanic where a carnage heap could cushion a fall.
