Anno 2070
« on: November 05, 2011, 07:58:44 am »

Anno 2070 is the newest title in the Anno city-building series, where you not only have to build a city, but choose whether you want to balance the ecosystem or produce resources efficiently and quickly.

So, I played the demo. I really enjoyed some of the newer touches (island-wide mineral deposits, production chains organized in menu, Energy production) and frankly, can't wait 12 days for it. Anyone else fans of the series/haters of the series?

Here's the requested Anno 2070 demo on Gamershell, but I'm sure you can find it on other sites. It includes the first two tycoon missions of the game, and it introduces you to basic concepts and a few of the new techs. You can also look in the encyclopedia and view some of the new features.

I love the series but have deep concerns about the game. I understand the need to take it to a fresh direction and appreciate what they are trying to do but I know their normal balance issues will be further aggravated by the futuristic setting(historically most games struggle with this).
On a similar note, it gives me hope for a spinoff Guild 3 also set in this 2070 world.

I'm a big fan of the series. Well, I only played the first game and I still enjoy playing it. I just never took the time to get any other anno games.

The game has two factions: Ecos and Tycoons
And now there really is no way I'm going to buy anno 2070  ::)

What's wrong with the two factions? They actually allow for different kinds of settlements. While the Ecos (who are going for reusable, sustainable tech) have spread out settlements that maintain a positive ecological balance and have highly productive farms, the Tycoons throw caution to the wind and ruin the balance, mining quicker than their Eco counterparts.

What they fail to mention is there is, in fact, a third faction, the Techs, who are the only ones who can go underwater, and mine metals and collect other special resources which are only available underwater.

I might just be more of a fan of this because I prefer sci-fi over medieval gameplay.

I was already looking forward to Anno 2070, and I'm already downloading the demo. I'll let you know what I think afterwards!  8)

What's wrong with the two factions?
Well, they make the game sound like it's some kind of magical pony cuddles baby wonderland.
They could at least tried to give the factions some kind of not extremely obvious name.

Have they oversimplified it yet again? I'd love to go back to the 15xx and 16xx days of complexity.

No, its not overly simplified at all.  They give you all the information and whatnot that you need, but otherwise you'll the one that has to pull it all together.  I won't spoil the first two campaign missions, but you do work for the Tycoons, which are both strigent and... human.

The sad fact is, the game basically rubs our noses in our own human stupidity.  Which I guess was the point.  Overall, the demo is pretty good, but I'll withhold judgement until the full game comes out, although its glaringly appearant that Ubisoft is going to continue using its online-required mandate.

If only it was...

Frankly, they're simplified so you don't have to say "Global Trust Worker's Barracks" all the time. The Tycoons are greedy individuals who value covering their own ass and personal advancement over EVERYTHING ELSE.

The first guy you meet requisitions a modernized turbine in order to achieve energy production, but despite an engineer's protests of further testing, he orders it online. The second mission has you cleaning up his mess. Afterwards, he blames both you and the engineer for the problem.

I feel like the ecos are going to be even worse, prioritizing nature over human value.

Well, I guess I could give it a try sometime. I still have to actually finish a game of Anno 1602 and I should have 1701 somewhere as well.
I'm really bad at actually playing games for longer than a couple of hours.

Demo?
Yes. It's this sort of scaled-down version of a game that they used to hand out for free, so you would see what the game is like. the 90s were a crazy time...

Played and enjoyed anno 1602. Never really got into the later versions, as I got caught up in a wave of a bunch of other games. This does sound interesting though, might have to give it a try.
