I got the combat log, but it's more than 40k characters.  Unless I can figure out a 3rd party host.  I could probably save it and upload it to megaupload.

Wow, I could do this all day.   It's 5 pages, I didn't read it.  Someone asked for it, I uploaded it.  End of story.  Can't screenshot it cuz I wasn't there, pulled it from gamelog.txt or whatever.  It's 5 pages, I only removed the non essential info.  I don't have the patience to read 5 pages, only posted because 1 person requested it.

I once had an embark (500 year worldgen) with a cave dragon showing up on my deceased list after a month. I never dug past the fIrst cavern level, and a goblin siege followed by a tantrum spiral/loyalty cascade killed my fort.

I'm currently in Year 5 with my current fort.  Embarked in Year 4, and about a month later a cave dragon showed up as deceased for me as well.

What year was it?  If it's year 1,000+ then your dragon is fully grown.  If worldgen stopped before year 1,000 then the dragon is a juvenile and is NOT full size.  Killing a dragon in year 2 isn't impressive, as I think it's comparable size to a buffalo.  I'd have to re-check the size tokens, but a young dragon isn't very huge.

mind telling me how i can find out if there'sa dragon in my world or not?
i assume somewhere in legends...

Its in legends, under Historical Figures, and will have a d <year> next to its name if it died.
So if there has ever been a dragon, it should be listed there.

On that note though, is there any way to find out where it is to embark on its cave?

Well, i think that you need to find it's lair in Adventure Mode first (either by quest or by asking for surroundings), open the world map, take a screenshot, go to the embark screen, pinpoint the general location of the lair, reference to the screenshot for the exact spot of the lair and then embark on it.
I'm not sure if that's possible. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be.
Smaller world are easier to navigate generally so it would be a good idea to generate one, but i'm not sure if that doesn't lower the chances of dragons/colossus/other giant enemy spawn.

Edit: It might be a good idea to take a screenshot at the zoomed area of the lair(Quest Log -> Zoomed in (or something like that)) so you can know precisely where the lair is and choose it on the area map on the embark screen. It really helps if the lair is near some landmark like a river or the start of a mountain range etc.

I was angry with the inefficiency of a fort.
SO, I tried to flood it from a brook.
The first death was from dehydration.
