Potential for multiple Satellites
« on: November 04, 2011, 02:09:47 am »

No, I am not advocating that we sent dwarf-based satellites into space...yet.

What I am suggesting is simple: add in a possibility that a given world will have more than one moon. I suppose the title could have been more clear.

There could either be a random chance that a given world will have multiple moons, or simply a worldgen option or something like that. Worlds with different quantities of moons could act differently in terms of tides and such if tides and such ever end up in the game.

What is already going into the game could be affected by this too, though. Individual moons could affect certain variants of were-creature. Although I imagine in most cases a were-creature would only be affected by one of the moons, it could be... different, having a dwarf that turned into a rampaging monster twice a month, or worse, turned into two different monsters each once a month.

I guess they'd probably have to be able to be differentiated somehow, though. No idea on how this would work without adding a 'local cosmos' tab or something to legends mode. Maybe the moons could be colorful... although I could see people trying to destroy one of their worlds moons if it turned out Microcline cyan.

Plus, it's a small step towards more space-related stuff. Which, as I remember correctly, exists in some form or another in the grand scheme of things.

Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Astronomy stuff was discussed some time ago and I guess Toady is going to do this someday.

To add some Bay12 flavor to discussion though I'd like to suggest that moon would be made as one of the planes(like fairyland and such), so you could do something with microline moons.

Since the problem with multiple moons right now is that there would be multiple moon cycles...

Perhaps one of the moons could be considered the Prime moon for all things moon related: Tides and werewolves

While the others can have simple astrology bonus.

LOL would be awesome to have some a moon up there. once you go high enough you breach the moon and all the moon men start flooding your fortress

What if the world was a moon? That would be nice too, like in StarWars.

Werewolves in a multi-moon system would be tied to one moon.  Each different disease would be as well (so if you have werewolves, but aslo--say--wereboars, the wolves and boars wouldn't necessarily be on the same cycle).

Tides in a multi-moon system are also more interesting, but are mathematically possible to work out (it's all sin math of varying magnitudes and periods).

Hmm, that does being up an interesting question - what happens to a being with two different werewolf-esque curses when/if the two lunar cycles coincide?

Quarter wolf, quarter boar, half man? ;)

And this moons could be associated with gods or they could even be part of poems and ballads.

Such curses/diseases might be mutually exclusive.  That is, you can only be subject to one of them at a time (and immune to getting more).

But who knows.

Also:

Or the Quintaglio Ascension.

I suggest reading the series before reading this spoiler.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if some civilization's religions perceived one of the moons as a home of the gods or something to that effect.

This thread is going surprisingly well for something I started late at night. :D

That could work. That could definitely work. Ideally planes will be accessible through more than one means, though. On that note, what should happen if you mine one of your moons out of existence?

Quarter wolf, quarter boar, half man? ;)
(To paraphrase the description of Quetzovercoatl...)
Half wolf, half boar, half man, half insane.

I say one of the moons should be made of Grimacite, the other made of grey cheese, that there be a third small moon and the were-tacos be subject to the fluctuation of a moon that isn't even orbiting this planet, and that there are elves up there.  That'd be original, right? :)

Anyway, I generally like the ideas, so this is (the above excepted) my general nod towards "I support this".

Honestly, I wish it would go die in a fire, or something.  It's doing nothing but producing unpopular culture.

That is, culture that's a parody and that no one recognizes.
