Fort always accessible to enemies
« on: November 03, 2011, 09:01:42 pm »

Anyone currently running a fort with only regular doors blocking the way inside?  I'm thinking of giving it a go.  If no one is playing one now, are there perhaps any epics tales of past forts that attempted this challenge?

I had the door as my only defense in my current fort for about 6 years. Now I have 50+ well-trained dwarves and don't even need it.

Nice!  Do you use traps and/or danger rooms?

I've been horrible at defense in this fort - I simply have a down stair leading to my fort. no walls/doors, no traps, and have had no military. I'm thinking of keeping it that way.

I've [NO_EAT]'d kobolds and those have been the only thieves/invaders coming in so far.

How long does it take building destroys to tear down doors?  Is it instant, or do you have a little bit of time?

I read somewhere that it depends on the quality of the door.

I think the strength of the building destroyer matters as well.  And possibly the door material.  Search the forums for the test were a guy used captured trolls to test building destroyer capabilities.

Takes some time.  Artifact doors take a year to break down, while masterpiece door will keep  buildingdestroyers busy for a day or two. Also, I read somewhere that materials matter, as wooden doors go down easily.

I don't use danger room - dis be no fun. I draft all my male non-professionals into army, equip them with reasonable armor and weapons and send them against any hostiles  . I really like to watch how my recruits progress through all the years of fighting, how they gain new titles and kills to their list, how unlucky ones are losing limbs and becomming cripples, and of course some - the most lucky  - die horrible deaths fighting fire imps or werewolves. This is where the fun is at, not raping everyone with dangerroomed terminators. I even feel sad when one of my favourites gets wounded by enemies or dies from stray shot from naga or goblin. And also it gives you some interest in your dwarven war heroes, instead of these rank-and-file dwarves trained in danger rooms en masse that have nothing interesting about their personalities and achievements.
As for the traps - I used to have about 10 cage traps near the front door, to prevent too surprising ambushes. After few years I removed them, as removing goblin ambushers from cages and resetting traps was becoming too bothersome. But they did give me something though - a tigerman general himself led the assault on my fortress and got caged. Now its my most precious war trophy and resides in duke's throne room.

Here in the dwarven fortress, we have a very hands-on job experience based military, or to cut through all the fancy language, we arm you peasants with a stick and a helmet and send you out to fight the hordes. Those of you who manage to survive are instantly promoted to the next level and those of you who don't, well... we won't worry about them.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

My longest lasting fort didn't even have a door--just two gates wide open to the world.  Granted the militia that lounged about those gates could individually dismember an entire siege, but still, nothing in the way of dwarven hospitality.
