Blacksmith won't make iron stuff
« on: November 12, 2007, 08:03:00 pm »

I haven't had trouble with blacksmiths before, but on a fresh new map, I have a blacksmith and a peseant with blacksmith on who aren't following orders. They sit around all day with "no job" in their descriptions, while the work order at the metalsmith's forge doesn't budge.

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. The only difference this time around is that I've been getting my iron bars from magnetite instead of hematite. I've got plenty of charcoal and a few iron bars in the bar/block pile ready to go. The workshop is easily accessible. I don't get any error messages. None of the blacksmiths have negative thoughts or are busy doing anything else. It's like they don't even know the metalsmith's forge even exists, and the blacksmith built the damn thing!

What labor options are enabled?

Armorsmith - makes metal armor
Weaponsmith - makes weapons
Metal crafting - makes crafts
Blacksmith - ? makes furniture ?

Usually for all my metalsmithes I enable all metal making related labors so I don't have to worry.  Are the labor options a problem in your case?

Does everyone understand the difference now?

Metal Crafting is used to make chains (not blacksmithing/metalsmithing), Trapping is used to make animal traps and Crossbow-making is used to make crossbows.  If you are having problems it is likely because its one of these cases.

You're right, weaponsmith and armoring weren't on. I've never had a blacksmith show up that wasen't also into making weapons and armor. Kind of confusing.

I think in the old version we'd have a bunch of forges, and want to have each one dedicated to training a separate skill.  To do that we'd have to set the workshop profile for each forge to a different dwarf.  I like being able to just select the different forging skills per dwarf, the way it is now.

The difficulty is that its not obvious what is wrong, and not everyone wants the complexity.  I'll make a suggestion, the 1000 point starting anvil should include a smithing dwarf, with average skills at all the metal furnace and forge jobs.  I'd like some way to bring back the old "blacksmith arrives in august with anvil" function, for that 1000 points, but I can see right now that it wouldn't work for more dangerous locations.  I think when the game can take dangers into account when placing the dwarf wagon, it can do something similar with an immigrating blacksmith.
