I would like to assume anyone with half a brain used pointless iron and copper to train legendaries.

Pretty much, yes. I always have an excess of the stuff somehow. I have about 50 statues, 70 full sets of armor and I still have around 100 wafers left. I think I'll just start using it to make socks.

I know what you mean, I have four adamantine spires (that I know of) within my 2x2 embark.

Luck I guess, or maybe they're there to lure me underground.
[I hate building underground]

One of the first things I do after setting up a farm is dig down to magma and get both an armorer and weapon maker churning out copper equipment full time. Anything that's not masterwork gets melted down and re-made. By the time I have both at legendary +5, I have enough masterwork armor and weapons to outfit the entire population. 150 dwarfs in masterwork copper can deal with gobbos more effectively than 10 in steel, and it has the added bonus of euthanizing the useless migrants in hopes that more migrants will come with better skills. I save all my steel for when my weapon maker is maxed out, then most of it goes to masterwork trap components.

After a siege I just mass melt everything, if it takes too long I just chuck it into my volcano. I have three spires, I've only used one and I have an excess as it is.

You get one spire per embark tile, so no more for you.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I try to depart with the ore to make bronze equipment before I arrive.  I usually cave in/flood myself to death before I run out.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<
