Goblin Artifact Weapon?!?!
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:05:40 pm »

I made a shocking discovery today. After some talk on a different post I read about training goblins to fight the HFS, I decided to try it out. So I locked thirty or so goblin thieves in a special danger room of weapon traps (as opposed to spear traps, because as enemies these work without all the hassle), and presto! the goblins hit legendary knifer in no time.

But that's not the surprising bit.
"Bogmeslu Snos Osm, Pineseason the Rampages of Distraction a Large Silver Dagger" appeared on my artifact list in blue after a few months. The goblin named his weapon! In Goblin!

I didn't get an announcement of any sort for it, in case you were wondering.
Has anyone else seen this happen before? What should I do with this dagger? Shame it's not a better weapon. It would be pretty cool to have, like, an ex-Goblin artifact steel longsword (I'm playing as humans for this fort) or something to use against them.

Daggers have a crazy small contact area, so it should still be a serviceable weapon.

Named items are not proper artifacts, they're a bastardized form of artifact that makes its way on the list.  The goblin just had no way of informing you that he'd given the weapon a name.

Either way, this is an amazing discovery, and seems like it bears some heavy implications into goblin and dwarf society.

We should try it on elves and humans too. Maybe minotaurs and other weapon-wielding beasts?

Oh, I know. Isn't this crazy, though? If I leave them in there long enough I might wind up with thirty named daggers. Do they stick around after I abandon the fortress? I could have some fun with them in adventurer mode. Or I could make a weapon trap all of ex-Goblin legendary weapons. There has to be something cool I can do here, but my ideas just don't seem awesome enough.

Ideas?

Good call. I'm playing as humans so obviously can't test it on them (they do name them when you're playing as them) and the merchant elves don't carry weapons, but maybe if I can provoke them to siege. I'll try it with White Tigermen (Fortress Defence Mod) soon, also.

They'll scatter after abandon, but remain on the site, unless you use hack and DFLair then nothing scatters.  Even without a lair, lead bins don't move much (if any) after abandon so if you can store them in lead they'll pretty much be right where you left them.

Update: We have another one, and this is even weirder.
"Usluntungu: Whitenesswaxed, a small troll fur cloak"
I've had dozens of named weapons by dwarves, but I've never seen a named cloak before. Also of note is that it was marked for dumping before it got named, and now I can't un-mark it.

Wow. This is a great discovery.

The goblin just named the item, if he grabbed some adamantine and took over a magma forge and created an adamantine large dagger engraved with images of screaming kittens, that would be amazing.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

That's too cool. What language did he use?

Yeah, creeping your forum thread gave me the idea. I guess I could have posted this there, but I was so excited I didn't think.

A minatour in my fortress armed itself on my weapons, and grew attached to a steel battle axe it used to kill all reclaim parties sent to find out why the adamantine wafers stopped being sent to the mountainhomes.....

To be honest i don't know.  I can't find out anymore because i lost the save file.  Although he had it from the moment i found him so im pretty sure that i can find him again and that itll be an artifact again.  What makes it cooler is that apparently he had killed a forgotten beast with it.  How do i figure out what language it is?
