Tips and/or advice for evicting dwarves
« on: November 02, 2011, 06:50:48 pm »

So far, my attempts aren't working out too well.

1) The drop zone
I built a nice 2x5 room, and packed it full of cage traps.
I then built a room with a retracting bridge floor over it, and burrowed some migrants there.
Pulling the lever caused the migrants to be stunned, but not trapped.

2) Staring contest
I next locked the migrants in, and threw down booze and food from above.  And waited. And waited.  The caravans come and go, but the migrants aren't getting more than drowsy.  How many years do they take between naps?

3) Getting the drop on 'em.
I tried dropping a construction on 'em.  Glass floor allowed to drop down and blast 'em around.
That accomplished only the destruction of one tile of the room, stunning the migrants again, and resulted in an unconscious dwarf covered head to toe in sand sleeping in the tile with the destroyed cage trap.

All I want to do is trap these FPS-draining migrants, and then try to sell them as slaves to the caravan so I don't get a ghost infestation and don't have to build a bunch of slabs.

Any advice?

If you want to cage them, just lock them into a room full of cage traps and wait for them to sleep.

However, due to a bug, when cages are taken to the depots, the creatures are freed from them, so you can't sell them to the hippies.

I had a farmer trapped in a cage trap when a goblin crossbowman shot him in the should with a bolt, saved his life, and I'd say you'd be best trying to damage them in a more.... Sharp way.

DODGE TRAP TO HEEELLLLLLLL!!!!!

Deathsword: I thought that cage bug was only for cages that were in animal stockpiles...

Loud Whispers: The point is to get rid of them without generating ghosts.

Just drop them from a tower and bury them. Gets your masons some experience and gives you an excuse to make a necropolis.

It was just a flesh wound, and the farmer recovered remarkably well, after the medical dwarf fixed him up anyways....

How about flooding the migrant dwarves off screen?

Can dorfs even be thrown off-screen?

No.  You can't get rid of them without killing them.  In the future, set the population cap so you don't get more immigrants than you want.

Dang.
I want a line of succession, and thus children, but not migrants.

Perhaps the only solution is to genocide the Dwarves in adventure mode before starting a new fort.

Or just kill them.

Mass burials... Within the walls of your fortress....

You always get two immigrant waves in your first year, even if Dwarves are extinct.  You're going to have to kill them and make slabs.

If you don't want migrants, just... set the pop cap to 0?  If you want children just... set the child cap >0?  I don't see the problem here, you appear to have misinterpreted the init.  Pregnancies ignore the population cap, you can (and will) get births above your population limit.

Population cap of zero, set before embarkation, does not prevent those first two waves.

However, barring some personal conduct that prevents slabs or coffins, just kill 'em! Throwing out eleven or so funerals shouldn't be that time or labor intensive.

200 dorfs smoothing and engraving your fort and your mine complex in a vast wave is a glorious sight. After that i let them loaf around for instant haul swarms or drop tower them into a mess then bury them in that lovely every-tile-is-a-masterpiece-engraved cavern they made for me and seal the place
