More brethren soon! It is five times faster then a R-010 building another R-010. You now have schematics to build many things, a EMCT(Electromagnetic Charging Tower), M-001(Miner), R-010(Standard Nanite), F-001(Nanite Factory). You also decide a need for a dust collector, you and the other two nanites begin work on that, and in some time have a modified R-010, Now a R-011. It is much like the mining nanite except it is faster at collecting light particles from a surface. You have spent a long time designing, and the miners have collected a significant amount of steel for you. So much that they have dug a large expansive tunnel of networks underneath you.
You feel excited at this new possibility of having more nanites soon! The loneliness begins to fade away, but it lingers knowing you have no one like you.. If only you new how to build yourself.

The R-010s go off collecting dust and carbon to build the newly design factory. The M-001s continue to dig more steel out and soon they have gone through the bottom. There are now tunnels which run from the surface you are sitting upon to the open area beneath. You receive news from one of the M-001s almost fell through the bottom, and decide the best move is to restrict digging straight through. The M-001s report it is just air beyond the steel. Soon after you hear of this report the nanites have completed our new factory.

The factory is in well working order, obviously a good design, and its first test of its assemblers have proven it builds as well as the R-010s, but with it's current power levels its significantly slower. Hmm.. You have started to sense a slight change in the output of your EMCollector too, it is not nearly as stable anymore. Though you do not have such large power requirements as the F-001 and it hardly affects your actions. The nanites and the new R-010 continue to collect carbon, steel and silicon as they wait for your next order.

Design a steel oxidation powerplant: takes steel sheets and oxygen from the air, outputs waste iron oxide (aka rust), small amounts of whatever was in the steel except iron, and lots of energy.

Also, the submitted idea for a processing nanite was poor. I suggest modules that just boxes with nothing but processors, can be chained together into a single rigid structure giving them massive bandwidth essentially making them one unit, with any kind of powerplant at the end of the chain. PURE specialization, immobile, power hungry, requiring attachment to a large heat sink (like the steel plate we're on), but REALLY good at their job.

um, no, they have no way of harming us, same applies for any biological life really. Mechanical things like beating and crushing doesn't really work at all on these scales, we're to chemically different for anything else a cell can throw at us to even remotely work, and to small for anything large enough to have some form of cutting implement to notice us. Really, the only things we need to fear is fire, radiation, extreme chemical conditions (far beyond those that any life can produce), and other nanites.

No offence, but you don't know much about how things work at microscopic scales, do you? That thing would be worse at constructing big things than what we currently have, and a nanite that big is better made with semi-independent modules simply gripping each other, each unique and able to rearrange itself on the fly. And we don't really need either of them right now, we're better of going for numbers.

I'm not good at teaching stuff, but I can give you a few heuristics:

* gravity can usually be ignored
* material strength is much greater compared to most other things
* Brownian motion is a constant threat
* you can get very powerful gecko-like stickiness by just giving a surface the right shape
etc.

Maybe a metaphor would work better... Everything is made out of admantine, on the moon, being constantly assailed from all directions by random cannonballs that would destroy it if it was not made from admantine, and is covered in glue and super-sticky.

i spent alot of time resizing it but sorry it is so big it kinda failed. its the nanite factory,it turns iron/stuff molten and stores it in that state.   tell me if its bad or good,
