Deeply Atmospheric Games

I'm looking to play some really good, first person atmospheric games. A good example would be STALKER, or Metro 2033, or Amnesia if I were into horror games. PC only please, and its even better if its on steam.

Atmospheric is a hard term to define, but I thought bioshock had some interesting atmosphere.

It is, I wasn't sure if I should call it atmospheric or immersive, but generally anything thats fun just to be in. I was hoping my examples would help with my shortfall of words.

I played Bioshock 2 a bit, is the first one much better than that? I didn't especially enjoy the second but it was alright.

And I am now also looking into Prey!

I don't know, I haven't gotten around to bioshock 2 yet.

Thief : the Dark Project and its sequel Thief 2 : the Metal Age (and the large amount of their very high quality fan-missions) were very atmospheric (and always are).

Can't say for the 3rd game of the serie as i never played it.

Thief is definitely good, I have the third but never didn't get very far into it. I should play that again if I still have my save.

The original Unreal is a pretty atmospheric game, given it's time. Hell, it still looks good today. Surprisingly immersive. Should be able to get it along with the rest of the Unreal series with the Unreal Anthology collection for cheap.

A mod for Unreal Tournament, Oldskool Amp'd allows for the continuation even further of the Unreal story with Operation: Na Pali. They're pretty cool. Some of the Nali get enough balls to fight back with weapons, and you can order them around as well.

Penumbra
Alone in the Dark
Planescape
Bioshock
Half Life
Aliens vs Predator (the newest one)
Minecraft, when you're deep in a mining tunnel and you can hear a zombie nearby and you're walking catiously and HOLY FUCK A TINY SPIDER IS EATING MY LIVER OH GOD ITS-creepersplosion- *you have died*

let me be the odd duck and recommend Arma 2. It's first person and immersive. Lots of things going about their own agenda. All of this is moot if you can't auto-correct the awful(read AWFUL) voice/dialogue. It's an immersive sim.

Mafia 2 had a great feeling of the world about it, especially watching the seasons changing to winter and the whole world adjusting to the weather. Just being in the world was more fun than playing the game.

Technically... any first person game where the focus on the story is strongly atmospheric...

7th Guest is a puzzle game yet it has a lot of atmosphere for example.

Deus Ex - First one would be the best choice
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - I don't know why this game got nearly no attention, it's just great.
