Interesting feature, diagonal rivers = passable rivers

For the longest time I was building straight channels, of which I'd have to bridge over, but one day I saw that a diagonal path was shortest.  Funny, it works just like a regular river, but you can walk over it.

Do you really want to risk having open water? It's one of the leading causes of dwarf deaths

My first dwarf death in thirty days of playing came from water.

Not the five invasions.

Not accidentally flooding my base with lava.

Not even from the cave in on my third fortress.

Urist McDumbass ran away from a vulture, into a pool of water. And drowned.

This is a brilliant example for dwarfen culture.
Magma? It's their blood and most beloved substance.
Sieges? Hey, they can stand their dwarf against damn elves/humans/iron caravans
Cave ins? Hey, they dug it out themselves, they know their beards can protect them from things like falling rocks
Wild animals? Exspecially fish btw?
Hmmm, he attacks me, but I am quite safe because I am steel armored, but I JUST HAVE TO GET INTO SAFETY IN THIS WATER THERE.

My trade depot is set to flood with water at the pull of a lever.  It's deep in the tunnels with easy drainage.  I call it my "water for goods" trading policy.

well, if you 'channel' it out, you have ramps, that dwarves can easily get out of.

This works some times. Falling stuns dwarves, and dwarves who are less than "competent" in Swimming can't keep from drowning in 7/7 water. So if the dwarf falls in, is stunned, and drowns before he can recover and get to the ramp in time, then it's not quite as helpful. Best bet is to just cover any body of water that does not expressly need to be open.

Of course, this is assuming we're talking about murky pools, and not, say, a 47-tile wide major river canyon that plummets 15 z-levels to the water's surface. Then it's better to wall off access entirely, if you're looking for safety.

a 1-tile diagonal channel (what I assume you're talking about) in addition to being able to be crossed by diagonal motion at a right angel to it, also has no pressure.

It is slower, but what do you mean by it has no pressure?  Does this mean it doesn't drop z-levels?  Does this mean I can't run a waterwheel off of one (if I were to straighten it out and re-route it to the edge of the map?)

I looked at your library briefly.  I understand the basics of water in terms of flow and how not to flood my fortress, but what limitations does diagonal water have?

Unpressurized water won't go up. only down. if it goes down it then has the possibility of going up again unless you diagonalize it again at the bottom.
