I'm definitley watching, may I suggest a Cultist-style class, worshiping the Lovecraftian beings of the other universe?

I suggest Tinkers being a class rather than a race.
That makes sense.

Also, some of the suggested classes could be straight 3.5 classes with particular skill choices. I could see Scavenger as being a Rogue with some ranks in Dungeoneering, for example, although I'm sure there's a better example in a sourcebook somewhere. Temple Raider of Olidimarrha(sp?), maybe. On which note, it might be a good idea to allow at least some Prestige classes to be taken as base classes, if appropriate. It also might be worth coming up with some extra skills to fit in with the setting.

Still, I would like to suggest one more time, for posterity's sake and since it hasn't seen much public consideration in this thread, considering an alternate system. I think the "pistol to head" comment shows that you already know how much of a headache it's going to be to come up with stats and progression charts for the different classes and races. Retooling existing classes will help some, and races theoretically aren't all that difficult, but it's still going to be a fair amount of work. Some of which might never actually get used, shame to say, depending on how many players actually sign on with the whole idea.

That said, a more flexible system, perhaps a FATE variant or something in a Point-Buy, might make things a little easier. I know I already suggested that in the other thread, but some of the folks here might not have been involved, and it seems like the right time since we're about to get into the fiddly mechanical bits.

Anyway, sorry for a bit of a derail (and for being a broken record, if I come across as such). Just thought I'd throw the idea out there before diving into hacking 3.5.

I'm also posting to watch, since this is looking pretty awesome.

If you make Tinkerers a class, I suggest you also add Inventors. Whereas Tinkerers are good at finding and using Artifacts, Inventors are masterful designers and builders of Junk Tech. Using whatever is on hand, they can easily make a tool for any situation, and, on rare occasions, they can come up with Da Vinci-esk contraptions.

FATE could be fun system for this game, you'd just need to retool some of the skills and stunts, assuming you'd base it off of Spirit of the Century, since, as far as I know, it has the most Open Game content of any FATE game. Then you may or may not want to make guns and weapons a bit more lethal, since they and also fist were made mostly equal for pulp sensibilities. Fortunately, that's not too hard, since there aren't any stat blocks in FATE; you'd just have to make a note of how you're adjusting things.

Anyway, what's great about FATE is that it's easy to run and easy to play, and character creation is simple. You just need to pick your skills from best to worst, some aspects, and some stunts. Using this system, a Tinkerer could take an aspect called "Tinkerer" and the stunts Personal Artifact, Rare Artifact, Secrets of the Arcane, and/or possibly Artificer. They'd also want to take Mysteries as their highest skill, or at least one of their higher skills.

Guys, the only tabletop game I have is DnD 3.5, and I'm not at liberty to spend any money (not that I'm even old enough to have a job). The pistol to the head comment was a joke anyway, I would scorn the bigger list and whittle it down...

The Spirit of the Century SRD is Open Game content, and, therefore freely and legally available.

I'm probably not going to join with the playing later (high fantasy post-apoc isn't really for me), but for classes I would suggest havingl just a few archetypes to choice from at start, and then enable customisation and specialisation of these as you level up (not necessarily the prestige class way, it could be part of the original archetype progression). Or even a classless system, where skills/feats/abilities/whatever can be purchased by anyone who meets the requirements.

Dangit guys, I was all excited about DnD 3.5 because I had just found my pound of dice after a few months in which it had been lost...
I'm not afraid of heavily modifying the crap out of it either though.

I thought we were doing a dark fantasy?

Nevermind. But the point still stands, magic is dangerous compared to DnD.

Well, then, if that's how it is, then I stand by my original statement that 3.5 is a pretty cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything.

You have my sword.

(And my keyboard. Ya know, if you'd like us to be working on races or classes or something instead of just leaving it all on your shoulders).

I pretty much completely agree with this.

Although I do have to say that FATE is a pretty cool guy too, and we should make plans to hang out with him one of these days.

I'll tell you guys if I need help with anything.
As of now, I have too much piling-up-end-of-quarter-to-finish to write a formal report for the humans (Although I have their idea, they'll be... far different from the original DnD 3.5 humans (That's reserved for the Pures)).

Anyway: you're a bold soul, Powder Miner, and I salute you! Good luck with shrinking that pile o' stuff; I'll be looking forward to seeing what comes out of your efforts. ^^
