Scorpions are good... But a set of three !!GIANT WAR TIGERS!! can kill anything.

Might be a little tricky to set up a breeding program, though...
You could say breeding them is...

I'm going to enjoy trying to mod in camera workshops that work as witnesses. I can put them in corners and the less-frequented areas.

I've already made plans for a George Orwell big brother fortress, originally intended to catch vampires.... Gone horribly wrong sometime during my employment as overseerlord.

...
- Will there one day be ambushes that kill silently without being announced because witesses fail to report their discovery before being killed?
...

I can imagine it now...

You're just happily attending your fort, when you notice a few scattered dwarf corpses in some odd area. Look around, nothing out of the ordinary to be seen. Go to the workshop area to have some coffins built, and, to your horror, you see lifeless bodies, everywhere. Dwarven Blood covering everything. Something isn't right. Syndrome? You get ready to send your militia out to hunt for a FB, And see half your army lying in the barracks, dead. What the hell is going on...

You rally up the few remaining soldiers, but before they can even get to their station, an ambush appears out of nowhere, and slits their throats within seconds.

"Your fortress has crumbled to its end."

Looks like I'll just need to give every dwarf a pet/ and or war scorpion
You've just put the tantrum spiral threshold that much lower. Pets dying is one of the more popular reasons why dwarves tantrum. That and I'm pretty sure Toady won't let animals give witness testimonies.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

But the animals will be able to meat shield for dwarves that can sound the alarm - also it can be assumed that one shout announces an ambush, only to be followed by the shouts of every dwarf in the fortress, a sure fire way of announcing pesky goblins.

Witness, please rise to the stand. Could you please tell the jury what happened the fifth of Obsidian?

The Jury has reached the conclusion that Urist McGuilty will be submerged in soapy water for two years, until his beard is squeaky clean and devoid of all dwarven soul.

"NO! NO!"
Urist McGuilty has gone insane!
Urist McGuilty has gone melancholy!
Urist McGuilty has collided with an obstacle!
Urist McGuilty has been struck down!
