Today I learnt about water pressure.
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:35:49 am »

Turns out attempting to fill a reservoir with water flooded my hospital room and the entire main stairway. And every fucking dwarf is ecstatic about it, despite being trapped on each level. Anyone have any ideas for fixing this before the water fills my fortress up one by one?

Evacuate? If there's a miner trapped with a few survivors, get him/her to dig them above the water. Thats all I can think to do.

I'm going to have to go with that, I got one digging out a massive channel below the water channel, hoping to drain it long enough to stop it. otherwise, I'm gonna have to evacuate and wait until winter when the water freezes.

Oh fucking great. I actually manage to almost survive this without a single fatality somehow, and then my very first goblin ambush hits. This is not my day...

After a second ambush, it was made all the more painful by a group of elves arriving. After going over the wreckage, there are about 10 points where I was THAT close to fixing the solution before the next thing screwed me over. Oh well, cbf reclaiming. Just going to start over since I really don't want to sort through the belongings of 60 dwarves. Despite all this, I actually kind of enjoyed seeing my hard work fall apart haha

And the last dwarf goes insane. I don't think I could of possibly come up with a better ending.

The best ending of a fortress was a legendary axedwarf and an ecstatic child.
All others were dead, and the child was playin in the bones.
One word:
Boatmurdered.

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Yeah, I kinda used boatmurdered to get me into the game/as a guide, which is probably why most of my forts start off well, then go to hell suddenly.

Yes, that might be a reason.
Have you got elephants roaming the lands and/or play DnD?

In pre-conquest Mexico, in what's now Mexico City, the ruler Ahuitzotl had ordered an aqueduct built to convey water from the the springs at Chapultepec after he had conquered Coyohuacan.  the ruler of that province refused, saying the water pressure would be too dangerous.  Ahuitzotl had him killed for his insolence, and did it anyway.  The city flooded, and the waters damaged his palace, causing him to be hit in the head with a falling beam and rendering him brainless for the rest of his life.

Fun (and Fun!) with water pressure gone awry isn't limited to DF players.  If you think about it, the Aztecs were pretty damn dwarfy.

And I guess they also hated their nobles....
Wait....
Are they small people with long beards?
No?
Sure no?
Damn, I thought we would have discovered the origin of the dwarfes...
