If we're starting a purpose-built game, then I wouldn't feel bad SM'ing in another species and planet (Mars?) to accommodate the design, and then SM'ing out the tech.  You can un-research tech via SM mode, so I'd un-research the genome and species research.  Or, hell, just SM in a totally new species, so that sub-species could still be generated via research..

Administrative log of Governor Raddish.

Transmission date:  1st of June 2030

The first stage of research into the shrinking down our laser technology so that we can fit it onto a fighter with room to spare was completed today.  Whent hey asked me on how the ship was going to be designed so we can find out if this is small enough I didn't know what to say.  I have no experience in this field and don't really know full what the previous Governor intended for this ship.

After some thinking I decided to only dedicate a handful of labs to the continuation of the research and the rest will focus on something more in line with my expertise.

The geology team that was left on Luna to see if there was anything hidden on what was seemingly just a barren rock has reported a discovery of approximately 100,000 Corundium held beneath it's crust.  It is surprisingly easy for us to access and there is going to be an investigation into how the survey ship managed to miss such a mass of resource.  Especially one that we have difficulty getting out of the ground here on Earth.

A gelogical survey of Titan, one of the moons orbiting Saturn, has discovered substantial deposits of some minerals underneath it's crust.  Details follow:

With this discovery the investigation into the geological survey ships has been dropped and the lack of discovery of the Luna minerals has been put down to a technical fault with the survey gear.

A new scientist has been recruited to join our research division.  He is one of the leading experts on Sensors and Fire Control.  He was brought in to fill a gap in out knowledge and will likely be very usful in the future as we complete the design of the first Fighter.

Though some of those minerals are more abundant on Titan the others might become useful if our stocks on earth falter in the future.  It is always useful to be prepared.

I hope this method of write up is working.  My first community game like this...  If there is anything you want me to add to these reports I am open to your feedback.

I really like writing it, it's kinda like writing for roleplay I guess.  Not that I think I am really any good at writing in character most of the time.

Posting for a community game pretty much is roleplay, so all's fair.

Also, just an FYI: you can promote a scientist and they gain more research labs.  If you have a 50% energy weapon scientist, but he can only use 10 labs, then you can promote him to use many more.  With realistic promotions turned off, then this is the only way to improve lab amounts.

I didn't know that, I have never played without realistic promotions on though.

Also I want to make sure that it is enjoyable to read the way I am writing it.  Afterall I can alter it if there is something annoying in there.

The second shrinking of the laser size tech I was going for is the 50% size, 20x recharge rate one.  Once thats done, you can design the laser itself so it'll fit on the ship.  I believe a .2 size power plant will be needed for such a laser.

As for beam controls, reduce the range to 25% size, 25% range, then change the ship restriction to fighter.  Leave the speed the same.

Administrative log of Governor Raddish.

Transmission date:  1st of January 2031

The first year went by without much hassle, this year my goals are going to be to get the commercial shipyard finished and to keep our research into laser weapons moving along.  At the same time I am going to set up some other research projects to go alongside it with other things I feel we require.

Transmission date:  16th of March 2031

The 2 new Woden class Geological Sruvery vessels were completed today.  It came to me to name these great displays of our planets abilities.  As I had no idea what the naming scheme for the previous ones were and they were not named before the previous Administrators tour ended I decided to name them the Lodden and the Beaulieu.

They have been given assigned commanders and given the same objectives as the original ships.

Transmission Date:  1st of June 2031

Our main scientific expert in the field of Laser weapons, David Cole was today diagnosed with a serious medical problem.  For his privacy we are not going to reveal the nature of exactly what his ailment is, suffice to say that it is going to affect his long-term health.  We offered him the option of an early retirement so that he could live with his family but he stated that he knows the planets needs are more important than his own for now and he isn't going to be too ill to work anytime soon.

He is also assisting us in finding a replacement for him should he be forced to retire in teh future.  He knows of a few names who would be able to continue his work in his stead and we are looking them up and interviewing them.

Transmission date:  16th of June 2031

The search for another scientist in the same field as the Laser Technician Cole has been extremely fruitful, we expected it to take a long time to find someone at the same level but Cole himself pointed us towards his long time colleage and friend Andrew Richardson  After a few interviews and the granting of the proper clearance we are proud to welcome him into our scientific establishment.

David Cole has said he is still not going to retire citing that it is better to have two skilled scientists than one.

The commercial shipyard was completed today.  It was named the Federal Portsmouth Shipyard, a name I expect will go unknown by many but is the name of a historical dockyard from my country of origin.  It's good to be governor, I get to name things how I like, to a degree of course.

It will probably need to be expanded over time but for now we don't even have a ship that we can construct in it.  I am working through the possible designs sent forth by the research staff and have concluded that we need some new components designed if we are going to have a good merchant navy.

---------------------------------------

I will put any info I think is important for the next person into a text document with the file when I finish, as well as stuff that is more of a roleplay nature like some of the stuff I have written here even though it's probably of little use to the next player.

Also I am going to put this new info into practise from this next year on, just as soon as I work out a roleplay reason to add it.  I had already done this one when you wrote that, I am not sure if I am playing fast or if there is not much to really think for ages over this early in the game.

Administrative log of Governor Raddish.

Transmission date:  1st of January 2032

I arranged a meeting with the pervious person to hold my position to enquire as to what his intentions were with regards to the fighter craft he had started to design but never finished.  He said he meant to send me a file with the details of the next stage in it's production but apparently it got lost in the system. He explained what was needed to finish his design and now I understand how to move ahead witht he project and have put it back as a major goal for my administration to get close to finishing it.

Today the scientists showed off their new engine design.  It is called the Rolls Royce Commercial NT Engine.  It is based on the same technology as the previous engines that were used on the Survey ships but has been made ten times as efficient.  The downside of that efficiency is that it is five times the size of the military model making it very unlikely that it will be useful for any ship except those where the size is not a worry in their production.

With this new development I have created a design for a large freighter ship called the Devon Class.  It would be large enough to carry most of the facilities we use here on Earth to another planet without much trouble.  The only problem is right now it would not be constructable in our current shipyards.  As soon as is possible the newest shipyard is going to be enlarged towards the point where it would be capable of production of this giant.

The surveying of the Solar System has been completed, there are no more planets to check for minerals on.  As such I am calling the survey ships back to earth while we decide what should be done with them now they don't have much use.

One of the science team by the name of was killed by an accident in the lab.  They did not have a specific assignment but the death has still been a blow to the rest of the research team.  There was a short memorial for them this evening and tomorow the the labs will be checked for safety although it is believed to have been an unfortunate accident.  Once it is deemed safe research will continue at its previous pace.

I have just received a report that they have finished research into the first generation Fire Control System for the laser based weapon technilogy we are exploring.  It is another piece for the fighter when it is finished.  We only have a couple more steps until it will be ready but the first is a quite large step from our current knowledge level to the next.

This will be the last bit I do tonight.  I should have gone to bed a while ago but this game is slightly addictive to me.  I hope this sleepy state hasn't caused me to screw anything up on here.

To make sure the civilian shipping lines don't use the freighter until I feel it would be right I have it set as obselete.  I don't feel right letting them make them before we have the ability to make them ourselves.  I hope this is a choice thats okay with everyone, not sure why it wouldn't be but I will ask anyway.

Personally I think it would be great to see civilian freighters out and about, although without a true colony on mars they'd be useless.  But its not a bad decision at all, its more of a personal choice.  I generally prefer civilian colony ships anyways..

Also, don't forget to design a luxury cruise liner, so they can build 'em and get us some tax revenue going.

For the fighter, here is the end design I had come up with, although I think it is using high density duranium armor..

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, I've realized that its NOT the 50% size, 20x recharge rate laser, its the 75% size, 4x recharge rate laser.  The reactor is the same though, .4 output.  However, it must remain a 10cm size laser.

Civilians (shipping lines and mining colonies) wont activate till you have a (potentially) populated colony. Dropping some infrastructure on Mars will do that, but until then the shipping line will just sit around doing nothing.

Just posting to say that I am still following this.

Can you promote people manually with realistic promotions? As in, can you find specific people to promote?

Also, it seems that we are going for a focus of light, fast, beam-armed fighters.

It's not that I don't want the civilian shipping lines, it's that it looks weird to me if they start making ships before we have a shipyard capable because I always figure the shipyards we use are on the forefront of technology.  I might allow them to make them at some point, I like the civilians using colony ships as well, makes it so I don't have to worry about them.

I could easily roleplay something into the game to make me more comfortable with it.

Administrative log of Governor Raddish.

Transmission date:   1st of January 2033

Over the last year much progress was made towards the construction of both our first military fighter craft and our first industrial freighter.  This year I hope to make great leaps in both those long term goals.  It is possible that we will be producing fighter craft capable of protecting earth by the end of the year.  However it is unlikely we will have the commercial shipyard anywhere near the size it needs to be anytime soon but all progress towards that goal is good for the next person to take this office and sit in this swivel chair.

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  11th of February

The upgrades of the Commercial Shipyard are coming along much slower than was expected.  It has been decided to outsource to another company to get some large freighter class ships into space that will be able to help us with our goals of expending to some of the other planets in the system.

To this end I was tasked with forming a design for a Colony ship, a ship that would be capable of moving people between planets, and a Luxery Liner, a ship that the rich would pay to travel through the stars.  These are the designs I have come up with:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In addition to sending them these two designs, the design we had for the Devon class Freighter has been unclassified and they now have access to it.  They will be recieving a small Government subsidy to aid in the production of one or two of these ships.

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  11th of September

The Asgardian Shipyard has finished it's thrid slipway and has been tasked with retooling so that it can create two or three of the smaller freighter craft.  These will be used to ship infrastructure accross to Mars so that there is incentive for the shipping line to create a colony ship and move people across.

I may yet see my dream of people setting foot on mars within my term in office, and all going well I may be allowed to take up office overseeing the Mars colony after my term here on Earth is over.

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  11th of October

Our research labs have shown me the newly designed armour for our ships.  In a demonstration they showed it compared to the previous armour we were using.  It looked like it was identical to the last one when they were showing it off, this was until they showed that it weighed a lot less and took up a small area of space for the same protection.  There was much congratulating done after the demonstration.

It looks like we have all of the technology ready for finishing the design of the first fighters.  This is indeed a great time to be Governor of our Nation.  A design for a laser weapon for the ship is currently being finalised so we can fit it to the ship.  It is going to be named after the scientist who has allowed us to make so much progress in this field in a short amount of time.

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  16th of October

With all the components ready to be produced in our factories I have green lighted the production of the first five Faering class laser fighters.  These will be a great acheivement for us as we expand slowly through the solar system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  1st of November

The first of the fighters I put down for production has been completed.  It has been put through numerous tests and is acheiving high marks on all of them.  It is showing a 730% increase in perfomance over the normal craft we used inside the atmosphere thanks to the highly advance engineering that has gone into making it.  It is the most technologically advanced military vessel we have ever created and is only the first in a long line of ships we will create for Earths protection.

Transmission end...

Transmission date:  1st of December

With the retooling complete the Asgaardian shipyard has started work on two Einherjar class supply vessels to move small amounts of equipment around.  They are expected to be completed around the middle of next year.

Transmisison end...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's all going well I think although I had to do the first half of this one again after the game screwed up on me.  So I am going to suggest to anyone who is after me to keep a backup of the game every year just incase a bug causes you to lose the game as you would have to start again from the last persons save if that happened.

And I am sorry if there is a problem with double posting, I just didn't want to tac this onto the end of a post that had nothing to do with it.

Will do.

So to what degree are we going to terraform in-system? I'd love to make Venus habitable... or, well, start making it habitable, anyway.

Also, do we prefer infrastructure-based transforming, or ship-based? I think that using actual buildings and importing the people needed to operate them would ultimately be more efficient than building an equal number of ships.
