Does anyone actually consult the Gladiator stats spoiler on the first post?

No - What are you talking about?/I just use the one posted each Arena Day.

DF Arena II - Day 22 Over - Tournament Day 24
« on: October 30, 2011, 08:01:29 am »

With the approval of the old GM, ed boy, I've started a new topic for DF Arena. I don't plan on any sweeping changes to the format, but perhaps more single combats could appear in the future.

I've included in this first post a copy of the previous topic's first page for completeness sake. I don't have it in quotes just to make it slightly more readable, but you can find the original here. It also doesn't have quotes because it'll be changed as the rules are tweaked.

This is a game where each person controls a gladiator. The career of the gladiator is your to control. If you are good, you will rise in ranks, earn fame and rewards, and even become the grand champion of the arena.

Spoiler: How to Play (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: List of Single Fights (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: List of Arena Masters (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Gladiators (click to show/hide)
This first day, I'd ask all the gladiators still interested to check their stats under gladiators to make sure they're still current and make any changes they see fit today and their actions. If anyone doesn't want to stick around for my inevitable demise, then they can simply say so.

Unfortunately, you can't as there isn't an option to that effect in the arena.

Runesmith, then again that'd probably make it a wee bit too complicated  :-\

E: Wait a minute just looked at the list of gladiators, do all the old guys start with all their new equipment? That sounds like it'll be near impossible for a new guy to win :(

Well, you've got to walk that fine line between making it accessible to new people, but not make time in the game be worth little to nothing. I've got a few things in mind, perhaps an arbitrary line dividing newer and older players like making tournaments for the new and for the old, but if anyone has a good idea on how to do this, I'm open to it.

I'll just start a poll, I guess, to decide whether or not to reset all characters.

Also, there's this potential rule from ed boy that, to my knowledge, wasn't officially established.

Potential new rule
Whenever a gladiator will recieve a prize from fighting another gladiator, then M, the arithmetic mean of the other gladiator's wealth will be calculated. If W is the prize-recieving gladiator's wealth, then the prize is multiplied by M/W.

The proposed rule would be very effective in keeping the player wealths competitive. If it was a duel and you had the same wealth as your opponent, your prize would be unaffected. If your wealth was double your opponent's, then the multiplier would be 1/2. If your wealth was half your opponent's then the multiplier would be 2. It is quite effective at boosing new players, but I worry that is might prove unpopular.

I encontered the new player/old player problem, and that was a potential rule. I didn't implement it immediately because it would be a very extreme change, and I wanted to get other opinions on it.

I think the whole group supported the new rule and it was to be implemented. Atleast, that was the impression I was under.

I'm still up for it, and the new rule was pretty much agreed on before ed boy had to retire the thread, as far as I'm aware.

For Sodel, he'll grab ArmorUser[3] for 60 Urists, and then fight a gorilla.

Thanks for taking this over and keeping the fun going!
