My First Mood and Arti- wait, you're kidding right?
« on: October 29, 2011, 02:25:00 pm »

Okay, so I've never been able to stick out Fortress mode long enough to have anything meaningful happen. Well this time, I finally had my first mood. A woodcutter of mine became possessed right as a new wave of migrants arrived. I was excited to say the least! My first ever mood!

Then he claims a craftdwarfs' workshop (at the time unused because I had an excess of rings and scepters and things). I was skeptical at first, but I said heck, why not.

Then, he goes and grabs a piece of wood before he starts muttering a name to himself. A single. Piece. Of. Wood. I'm slowly losing faith in my little possessed dwarf by this point. Surely, it couldn't get any more underwhelming.

It did.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A birch ring. With a picture of a wave. Not as cool as the masterwork kaolinite statues of a dwarf being struck down by a giant panda my mason was churning out. It's just not.  :P

Anyone else have some first mood stories?

My first ever mood was by a weaver named Stukos Confinedcudgels. It was a possession. At the time I didn't know how to manage jobs, so when I ordered a loom built, no-one did it. Stukos went berserk, and killed half of my fortress population, and was eventually struck down by a miner, who years later married another miner, who was the most succesful miner in my fort. I liked those two miners.

A jeweler, I forget what he even made.  It was my first fort, so one thing I am certain me made is everything covered in masterpiece jewel decorations. I didn't really get the whole military thing then, so rock traps!  And jewels obviously.  I was pretty amazed at how quickly the goblins came and in what quantities.

A bone sword was my first. I got pretty excited about it first, then I found out that, among my two soldiers, the one with the copper short sword was actually more effective.

I think it was a pig iron disc or something. Pity it was before I learned how to use weapon traps.

A leather thong. With menacing spikes of leather. Yup.

Just needed a whip and a spiked halter-top to complete the set.

First mood I got was Fey, back before I knew what the hell was going on. It freaked me out and I build walls around him to quarantine the dude from the other dwarves. I only remembered to check the wiki after he died, and then I just got mad.

Lemme see... I think it was a granite floodgate depicting the journey of my dwarves to the site. Pretty lame, but if I'd known how to use it as a painting back then it'd have made a great ornament for a dining room.

A pig iron longsword. I got a legendary weaponsmith out of it, so I couldn't really complain, but it was still a bit of a let-down.

The pig-tail cloth shirt I got in my second fort was also disappointing, at least until I figured I might as well buy all that cloth the elves hauled along in massive quantities and give him something to do. That was one of the wealthiest forts I've ever operated.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I remember the first Mood because it hit that immigrant the second they stepped on the screen though not the actual artifact; I think it was a single cloth shoe with shell, but I'm not sure.

From what I've seen through most of my fortresses, the first artifact is often very simple and only uses at most three of four items, and has few if any decorations.

My first artifact was a steel mace studded with some type of gems. I know now that was awesome, but I thought cage traps where far superior to a military. My first FB on the other hand...
