After a wait, I have a few more pictures!

The Zergling
Messy solutions abound in this one, not too happy with it finesse wise :/.  Enjoyed making it though, one of my most complex yet, if not the most complex.

A sculpture I made at the beginning of this school year, idea donated by my roommate.

This thread inspired me to a thought, I've decided to share: aluminum foil sculptures like this would probably make a very good base for paper mache, which could then be sanded and painted. Much easier than using balloons.
My art teacher last year had an idea similar to this, here's one of the finished products.

Huzzah! So, out of the sculptures you've made so far, which one would be best next covered in paper maché and painted? I, too, can see the swordsantman with its own fiercsome carapace-paint and its shield emblazoned with the city-hive's symbol; Psieye's "sun under mountain", mentioned in the DF:Playstyles thread, sounds like it would fit here as well.

If, by some insanity, you were to create a stop-animation, would it be easier if you made the parts with that in mind beforehand? Like creating joints reinforced with an adhesive tape so they bend cleanly?

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

Followup: this did not work as well as anticipated. Had some difficulty getting the paper mache to stay in place when applied to the irregular surface of the aluminum foil. Playdough would be much easier to work with.

Do you mean a humanoid with a sort of octopus head?  I could do that, I think.

Did you try sticking the paper mache to itself?  As in, did you wrap it around whatever the object was and then stick other paper mache bits to that loop?

@Nivm: I don't think I would need to or want to use tape, foil bends easily, and tape doesn't adhere well to the surface of a sculpture.

Yes. And it did work...just not as well as I'd hoped. Since the paper mache sticks to itself, but not so much the aluminum foil, even while it didn't simply fall off, it had a tendency to slide and rotate on the foil form.

If anyone wants to try it, I'd suggest planning to do it in multiple stages: Apply a solid base of paper mache to the larger, easier sections to work with, then let it dry. Then follow up with the benefit of that stationary section of paper mache to hold the thing by, and to attach the more finely detailed strips to.

Have you ever had that feeling where you create something that just feels really awesome, like the culmination of all of your skill for that moment?  I feel like that for this sculpture.  It's a shame that it's a turkey and not something more epic though >_>
