Dear lurkers / to whom it may concern,
The dwarves and I are toiling away. We have not forgotten you. So, here are the notes to date;
12 Galena, 145 - Righto - The Roc Busbel Belgron Ini Beru payed us a visit. It's a bird of prey so large and ferocious it dwarfs many dragons. All beneath its mighty wings should fear the sky. Now, it is possible we should fear the sky, but this fuck ought to be fearing us. I have got to say that aside from it flying up and down, it really failed miserably at being something that creates fear. It is as dead as dead can be, and that is that. Some things happened, but this phrase; "The militia commander bites The Roc in the head, tearing the skin and bruising the fat," stands out.
1st Granite, 146 - The world has passed into the Age of Legends. [deadpan]Yay.[/deadpan]
2 Galena - The dragon Slusa Obin Palathves Bestra Tul showed up. Our militia capt, Cog Rufreb Dumategen Ograd started to bash it twice with his steel shied and wisely decided that fat-bruising a dragon would be bad for his drinking habit, so he used his trusty iron spear Zegzat Medshar and stabbed the beast through the brain. (15 kills) On a side note, the fire is pretty.
[Dunno when it ended, but it burned every last square it could get to. Was a sight to watch as it split into three, then died to two, then split to four. I had thought the trees would burn, but they did not.]
11 Felsite, 148 - A siege of four sqauds showed up. There is squishy by the SW gate and both the SW and W edges of the map. The last squad came in behind the human caravan, got a few bolts off at them, and retreated before we could either open the E gate or run around the walls. It looks like we fought 41 squishies.
21 Felsite - Can't be sure how it happened, but the SW gate was destroyed and I only saw squishies, no trolls, so maybe an errant finger q-x the thing. *shrug* Had to dig out a bit more granite to repair the bridge. [Remember, I dumped it all.]
20 Galena - Nice sized siege. It's at the southern bit past the moat and it'd rather go west, but can not due to a row of trees. It could go east then north, but it may not. [Two plans come to mind, but plan A is so vastly overpowering, I am loathe to use it. Plan B is to send 12 units out then cut a tree, causing a bottleneck. Plan A is to use the east and the natural bottleneck. B is more fun, I think. Maybe a woodcutter will get hit.]
27 Galena - Plan B was, of course, chosen. It was a slaughter. You knew that. Mebzuth Isaklorbam Veladriltakuth Risen went into a trance and bagged 10. There are a few barrels being made - full of joy of course.
It is worth noting that one of our miners, Urvad Momuzingul, (Married to As Ringcaught,) has 29 children. We are on average 295 idiots. We'd love to break 300, but shit happens. [I love that she's been ecstatic lately, having talked to a child and all. Past ten of either sex and they stop being called "Eighth Eldest Daughter" and go to "Daughter/Son" until the last ones, called "Youngest Daughter/Son".] Our mayor, Asen Becorrigoth also has 29 children.
28 Obsidian - With two kills to its credit, Lorbam Feradil Ibrukobek Sod has decided to name his steel buckler Duralnamash. After 60 notable kills, and one peacock, Lorbam can name his sock for all I care. [No, I do not know why it is a buckler. No one here asked to make one ever. Squishy in nature, I presume.]
21 Felsite, 149 - [01JAN2012, 0943h - I managed to save. UPS = good. Power lost for a half-hour. It is fun shutting off screaming computers. I'd rather know why we lost power, since a nicer day in Miami would be hard to find. Seriously, poems are written about how nice this day is.]
14 Limestone - Lorbam Oslanbekar Unnos Lemlor named his copper shield Sogdolegast (Famineclench). This shield has helped to turn 20 squishies into a cleanable pulp. We are always happy to clean squishy pulp - therefore, we really like this shield.
27 Limestone - Kib Imeshingish Limarkesmor named a steel shield Athamotad (Focusedhands). This is a nice shield, as in it is of superior quality. It has also killed a squishy. We are not as impressed with this shield, but Kib has killed 56 squishies, and that is fair enough.
17 Timber - Some snatchers. Not really worth noting, but one of them ran like a little punk and while it got away, we found an ambush that went splat. I am sure you can by now tell that we are over-joyed at the sound splat.
*yawn* another snatcher, another ambush, another set of corpses. I should turn invaders off at this point, since dragons are proving boring and squishy fun is getting in the way of actually building.
2 Opal, 151 - Our dwarven liason came back. I don't remember the last year we saw him, but I'm thinking it has been near a decade. We are just finishing another layer. So far, 1-4 and 7-9 are finished. There are maybe 30 blocks left for layer 5.
18 Obsidian - Another level, z5 is complete. [That may seem slow since the last entry, but we also erected 80 pieces of flooring on z6.]
tl;dr
Invaders are back off. I'll turn them back on once the top is complete, I think. It is fun to kill squishies, but this
is a project more than it is a fort.
Since we are so close to finishing the dome, it is time to decide how best to proceed. Of course there is the widening of the cone - but how long will that take a cadre of twelve legendary miners? [As long as it takes me to draw circles with the world's best UI. (I love the thing, and can duck any incoming attack about said UI.)]
It is too early to fully flesh out ideas, but either a circular moat of ~5 tiles, or just turn the top into a lake, (Very slowly - there is only so much rain and only so many murky pools,) seems like something I'll do. There are the four glass towers that are planned, of course. Pipe works to cast the obsidian floor at -15z and the pumps/plumbing necessary to do that.
I am getting ahead of myself. Let us enjoy a picture or two.
A shot in DF:
And one in Stonesense: (Note, Image scaled in half.)
The rest of the dome should take just a short time, so the next update will take less time than this one did.
*grins*
P.S. The fish, Garbh, is just fine. I'd guess he's about 1/2" longer and enjoying the 55gal tank. I purchased an albino pleco, Urist, who is about 48mm long and enjoying itself in another (20gal) tank. Urist was about 42mm when I got it. Way to small to determine the sex for me, so "it" works for now.
