well, my favorite way is FAR from the best way, but here it is:

I like to use outnumbered, under-trained, under-equipped military.
we don't often do well, but it's AWESOME!

ive even started using a uniform thats just loincloths, wood shields, steel helmets, leather boots and cloak, and misc melee weapon.

i might loose the loincloths...

Put them on a one tile bridge with shields each so they at least have chance dammit!

I think the real issue is lashers, not the benefits of building a magma pump stack when ambushes are killing you. Lashers are trouble, but the real way to beat them as to beat all goblins is to attack them on your terms.

This means:
a. make them get shot at while they approach
b. make sure they engage combat with trained animals before you approach
c. make sure your squad meets up and gets ready before you give a move-near-the-goblins order--so initial "m" order should be into a safe area near battle, not battle itself.
and finally:

d. shields--you can make shields out of wood, leather, and virtually any relevant metal--their quality matters, weight helps in bashing but all shields are equally good and you can force a dwarf to wear many.  Many many many.  Try 5 shields a dwarf, I like 3.  Each can save from an arrow, dragon fire and each seems to help with blocking.

Really? I only lose around 7 dwarves every lasher siege.
Then again, you can afford to lose them when EVERYONE IS IN THE MILITARY !

Unless the player is going for cheap trap defenses, this is a good one. A staging area with no LOS to the approaching enemies is simply a must to avoid getting defeated piecemeal and to generate more 2+ Dwarves vs. 1 enemy situations than the opposite. For example a room(barracks) with one wall being a raising bridge to the trap hall.

Currently, I cage trap gobbos and pit them into the croc pit. When I get around to it, I'll build me a moat around my fortress and bridge drop them into the moat filled with crocodiles.
