Dogs Won't Breed
« on: May 02, 2008, 09:58:00 pm »

The horses breed. The donkeys breed.
The cats burn, so I don't know if they breed yet.
The dogs do not breed.

Nobody is tied up (no ropes exist)
Nobody is caged (no cages exist)
None of the dogs are trained or assigned to anybody.
They all just mill about the meeting area with the horses and donkeys and idle Haulers.

But they don't breed, season after season.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong here, and this is my first bug report so I'm not sure how to post the save if that's needed. A little help please?

The fact that they're assigned to anyone won't matter.
A slightly stupid-sounding question, but are you sure there's actually both male and female there?

Put them all in a pit. Maybe there just isn't enough... contact.   :p

In fact, unnecessary. Animals in DF reproduce via spores, so no contact is needed.

I bought 52 from the embark screen. I'm sure some of them are male and female. XD

(But I checked to be sure, and yes, there are.)

52? I remember reading somewhere that there's a limit of 50 for any given type of animal; that might be your problem.

Aww! So much for my hopes of having chained guard dogs in every bedroom.

If you're patient enough, you could still gradually increase the population of dogs by buying as many as you can from traders, assuming they'll bring you some.

Also, expect massive amounts of dogs dieing of old age at once if your fortress makes it to year 20.

HA! Oops. I guess I should have made half puppies then, huh? Well, it doesn't matter. If the limit is 50 then I can't secure my fortress with an unholy puppyswarm anymore. Is there a way to remove the limit? Is it in the inits or raws?

Note: In order to make any creature except dogs into a "war creature", you'll have to edit the RAW files. I have no idea how to though  :)

In an unmodded game, only dogs are war or hunting animals, though you may be able to tame or buy other creatures (they'll just be 'tame' though).

Dogs breed only up to 50 apparently; I've tried to equip my entire army with wardogs (but wound up with a couple of champions with no dogs, some marksdwarves with several dogs, and general doggy chaos). Caravans seem to only bring 2-4 dogs each, even at high (not highest) priority.

Training anything you want is possible. Just take their creature file and and the TRAINABLE tag to it. I'm pretty sure that you don't even have to make a new game. Personally, I'd go through and do it to everything before you make a new world just in case   ;)

War groundhogs and hunting walruses make it all worthwhile.
