one fortress save keeps crashing- any idea why?

Hello,

I have a fortress save that keeps freezing up (to the point where the app doesn't respond, and I am forced to quit out of it).

I am not sure what is causing all of this.  Here are some of the wacky things that are going on in my fortress:

1)  Some dwarves have been wounded, but since the map has no fresh water, and there is only booze to drink, there is no way to help them.

2)  There is a large above-ground structure that the dwarves are building

3)  There is a huge blood/goo stain in the main meeting area where many dwarves hang out.

4)  Stuff is being dumped, things are being smelt, hides are being tanned, cloth is being woven, items are being forged, glass is being blown, etc etc.


My machine is a 1.84GHZ athlon with 512k ram.  I am running Windows XP.  I think I have the game's temperature option turned off, and the redraw rate is set way down to 10-15 or so.

The game does not always crash at the same time or the same event (as far as I can tell), but it is too unstable to play more than five minutes before freezing up and dying on me.

Does anyone have any idea what the freeze up and crash might be related to?  Does anything here point to the reason for the game being unstable?

Same thing happening to me.

It seems to have started only after I started training my military.  I wonder if the blood or something about the military has something to do with it.

I am also making above-ground buildings but it wasn't until I recruited a bunch of dwarves that the game became unstable.

You guys should send in your savegames to Toady, so he will be able to check out the problematic part.

Hmm, I guess I can send in the savegame.  The problem is, it doesn't crash at exactly the same point every time, it is just really unstable.  I am not sure if this constitutes a "reproducible crash".  Anyway, what is the best way to send/distribute a save game?

I have tons of fortresses that mysteriously crash for no apparent reason, all doing different things.. I have noticed they most of them start after I dump things however.

If you have tons of wounded dwarves that are dying of thirst, they probably aren't in a good mood. Which would mean that you are probably experiencing the problem with unhappy dwarves causing freezes. The more that are unhappy the longer and more frequent the freezes are.

I found that the "sew plant fiber images" task may cause crashes.

Before you start e-mailing save games, look in your DF directory for "gamelog.txt."  It contains a blow-by-blow account of everything that happens in the game, and you can usually figure out what's causing the crash by the last entry.  Most likely, it's a trade caravan - particularly a human one with a merchant prince - that's causing the crash.
