Regardless of whether or not it's dwarfy, I lol'd.

But seriously, would something like this work?

HOLY PLUMP HELMET EATING FLYING MAGMA CARP!
Now we must do the opposite pump magma into hell to create a dwarven artificial hell in hell.

Interesting idea. A 25km high pumpstack. Sounds dwarfy to me.

Except that in RL we can pump fluids above the height of the pump, so we don't need the stack. Let's see, at about 1 atmosphere of pressure per 10 meters, and a 25km long pipe, that's about 2500 atmospheres of pressure at the bottom of the pipe. Or about 35,000 psi, about 1000 times the pressure in a typical car tire. Or 250 MPa for those who prefer SI units. That's gonna take more than the "garden hose" mentioned in the popsci article.

That's more than double the pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Hmmm, I just saw something that says the chamber pressure in a .50 cal machine gun is 400 MPa, so that gives one an idea of the pressures we're talking about here. Certainly pressure we (in RL) can work with, but that's going to be one heavy pipe. Water jet cutters work at from around this pressure up to ~700 MPa, so the pumps needed are available off the shelf. Which reminds me, I don't want to be in the same room if it springs a leak at the bottom. Water at that kind of pressure is a very effective cutting tool.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

So we basically have an exhaust pipe that does almost ten times the damage of a .50 cal.

Based on that statement, I can conclusively say it is not dwarfy. Unless it is sarcasm, in which it is definitely dwarfy.

At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Ok, I have to discredit any source that uses the word "brits" and manages to dumb down terraforming projects into 3rd grade fake-science.  I read half a paragraph, and I can see the redneck behind the computer smashing out the words "lol them britfags gots balloons".

Then again, the article (the whole site?) seems to be geared towards the hilariously stupid less-than-common-folk, and they seem to know their target audience (and act like it).

Yeah, it is PopScience, after all. I've been doing research on this, since I chose it today as a topic for an essay, and I've found a few other, more professional articles, regarding the subject. This includes a copy of a grant they received. Yeah. Supposedly they're being backed by a few notable British figures, who would have thought?

Well at least they're doing something proactive.  American mindset seems to be "nothing's wrong!" or "just carpool, it'll be fine."  But they're taking a proactive step!  Nothing quite does the job like "fuck you planet, you don't tell me what to do!  I tell YOU what to do!"

A lot of people are still saying the whole global cooling thing is happening.

My opinion on the matter is we still have about a few hundred years before we have any real problems with that, it could be many things other than humans, and that pollution is the problem right now. You can imagine the hole in my desk after reading the article  :P

Personally, I don't believe people are actually going to do anything, particularly here in the US, until all of the idiots around realize that there really is something happening.

We've screwed stuff up via unintended consequences of our technology. Trying to use large scale,  experimental terraforming/geo-engineering involving release of large amounts of foreign particles into the atmosphere to mimic a large scale volcanic eruption sounds like a good idea, really?

I'd like to see serious research on the side effects of such a release. Environmental impact, crop yields, etc. From the Guardian article it cited, it seems there is already some serious opposition from environmental groups and other watch groups.

On the other hand... I now think I need to build a large balloon shaped structure with a magma stack, to release pressurized magma aerosol into the atmosphere in order to "geo-engineer" a hellish fire-scape to reduce the effects of Dark Fortress emissions.

When I was reorganizing my inventory to fit all by books on life and death into various bags and things, I looked at my inventory and saw that I was multigrasping a necromancer slab.  It was pretty hilarious.
I think that would be an excellent way to impart the critical lessons of life and death to the ignorant masses.
