Artificial Artifact Project
« on: October 26, 2011, 02:33:10 pm »

So I've had an idea for a while.  The basic concept is simple: Let's deck out an item in exaggerated wealth.  The process is a bit of a headache.  What I essentially want to do is to get a full masterpiece item, or set of items, decorated with some of the most expensive materials available.  For instance, a steel battle axe adorned with hanging rings of platinum, gold, and rose gold, menacing with spikes of black bronze, obsidian, and goblin bone, encircled with bands of ruby, emerald, and elf bone, and plated in silver.

With recent modding advances, this has become easier, as you can specify an exact material to be used and add a specific decoration type, for instance you can specifically choose to decorate an axe with hanging rings of ruby, if you desire.  Obviously, this allows otherwise untouchable items to be touched with different decorations, like gem-encrusted weapons.  It could also be made to do it for free, allowing for infinite free decorations, and I believe it can even add the same decoration multiple times (three times the emerald rings!).  What it cannot do, is change the quality level.  That is still purely dwarf-based.

So what I'm planning is to start a fort with one or several modded-in decorating shops.  I may runesmith my dwarves for higher skill, as that could otherwise take forever.  Then I'll be using special stockpiles and burrows specify material use and some control of quality levels.  The end result will be massive piles of extremely expensive garbage, and one perfect item.

The current plan is to have the exploiting "bolts melt into multiple bars" trick so I can reliably get productive amounts of steel and candy, or other materials if I really want, and do this is a world thick with beasts and civilizations, so that I could make a collection of armor and weapons and allow an adventurer to reclaim them and go tear apart the countryside in dazzling brilliance.  Of course I'm also likely to make the fortress itself a dungeon so that the adventurer has to work for the prize!  Maybe add other forts with dungeon themes so that the player doesn't become bored with the weakling megabeasts.

So then, the question becomes, what shall I produce?  Armor and weapons, clearly, but I could also produce a quiver or two packed with astounding bolts of equal quality.  Nothing like throwing away diamonds to make you feel fancy, eh?  Clothing is also possible, in fact easier due to the production-line efficiency that I can handle cloth with.  A cloak and hood would go well with anything, right?  And they could even be decorated, though I don't imagine that bands of metal would work very well on a cloak.  Then there's various other items and exploitables, like goblets and totems and stuff.  Ever wanted to bash someone's head in with the holy grail?  Or a ruby-plated demon's head?

Someone tell me, what would be thoroughly entertaining to see produced, and bonus points if you can describe the most entertaining use for the item.  There are no -real- limits here, I can effectively decorate anything with anything, but let's try to remain within the realm of realism (lol).  No hanging rings of dwarven wine, please!

No hanging rings of dwarven wine, please!
FFFFFFFFFFF-
Let's make a steel axe, hanging rings of candy, and encrusted with black diamonds.

A hundred dead elves, and a hundred thousand more! HOORAH!

Heh - nice timing - I just started messing around with that to create some cool artifacts to 3-d render.

My current idea is a steel armor kit, studded with platinum & aluminum, encrusted with black diamonds, with a bismuth bronze shield studded with copper, and a steel short sword, studded with rose gold & encrusted with rubies.

It's not extravagant by any means, but a breastplate menacing with spikes of <every metal known to dwarfkind> just doesn't... work.

Although I'd suggest to try to get a item encrusted with every gem, and spiking with every metal, just for the sheer heck of it. CAUSE WE CAN.

A friend I was talking to suggested obsidian armor, and I retorted with "steel armor plated/covered with obsidian".

Also: metal, obsidian, cloth, leather, and bones can be produced infinitely at the fort.  Everything else requires importing or digging.  Or cheating, but I'm trying to work it as legit as I can, but will be using infinite bolt exploit just because melting weapons and armor doesn't produce reliable results.

I'm really liking the idea of a gem-encrusted skull... but should it be a skull or a totem?

acetech09: I mostly encouraged myself for this project based on your rendering :P  If you want to design an item and have me produce it and you render it, I'd be happy to tailor it to your vision.  But again I have to refer to the obsidian plating above.  I think that dwarves would love armor that's covered/banded in stone.  Children of the earth, and all.

This is a masterfully carved figurine of a goblin, an elf, a dwarf, and a human in slade. It menaces with spikes of goblin bone. It is adorned with hanging rings of elf bone. It is encircled with bands of dwarf bone and human bone. This object relates to the meeting of elves, dwarves, humans, and goblins in the year1.

I wonder if diamonds will make a good chainmail material. Just try to imagine chainmail made of hundreds of diamonds linked together by adamantine thread.  ::)

The armor itself would be near-invincible, but it would effectively be a tenderizer on the wearer.

Actually, I'd have to check if diamonds had any material tokens... chances are they're just placeholder numbers because diamond armor never happens without mods.

I saw an actual backpack menacing with spikes of leather the other day.  :o

So make sure your equipment set includes a nice backpack and flask.  Lots of material choices for the latter since it can be glass, metal, or leather in initial composition.

Can backpacks be made of adamantine thread?  If not, I may mod that in because I feel it to be appropriate.

Obsidian? Too mundane. Go for slade instead.

If it's possible, I think making a mace out of the steel bones of a steel demon would be awesome!
Alternatively, just use the steel skull of a demon as the head of the mace.
