Do what is right, and put the kobolds out of their misery.

This actually sounds like the kindest idea so far.

Bah, kobold rights. They don't need rights, they need to perish! They are not wanted in this world! If they were to live, they would have to do so alone. Not be pampered by dwarves!

You don't understand! If you don't protect them, they'll go extinct! And then...Hey! Stop jabbing me with those +elf bone pitchforks+! Kobolds perform vital ecological roles, just like elves and rabbits! ARGH THE PAIN!

I second making a  reserve for them. I don't know how kobold caves look like, but try to give them a life of luxury with fine dwarven furniture and fine stone halls. Be creative and make bring the marvels of dwarven society to these poor downtrodden little men.

I'm just saying, better they die instantaneously and given SPLENDID tombs, then die a slow, anguished death in a dark cavern.

Though this is a Kobold cave, so if you can, try save them before they forget how to eat again :/

Take up the Dwarven burden--
Send forth the best ye breed--
Go bind your Badgers to exile
To serve your captives' need;
To wait in heavy harness,
On fluttered folk and wild--
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half-canine and half-reptile.

Take up the Dwarven burden--
In patience to abide,
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple,
An hundred times made plain
To seek an elf's profit,
And work an elf's gain.

Take up the Dwarven burden--
The savage wars of !!MAGMA!!--
Fill full the mouth of Kobolds
And bid the undead cease;
And when your goal is nearest
The end for others sought,
Watch sloth and heathen Folly
Bring all your hopes to nought.

Take up the Dwarven burden--
No tawdry rule of kings,
But toil of Elf and Tigermen--
The tale of common things.
The ports ye shall not enter,
The roads ye shall not tread,
Go mark them with your living,
And mark them with your dead.

Take up the Dwarven burden--
And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better,
The hate of those ye guard--
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah, slowly!) toward the light:--
"Why brought he us from bondage,
Our loved Egyptian night?"

Take up the Dwarven burden--
Ye dare not stoop to less--
Nor call too loud on Freedom
To cloke your weariness;
By all ye cry or whisper,
By all ye leave or do,
The silent, sullen peoples
Shall weigh your gods and you.

Take up the Dwarven burden--
Have done with Dwarfling days--
The lightly proferred beard-hat,
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your Dwarfhood
Through all the thankless years
Cold, edged with Adamantine,
The judgment of your peers!

-The Dwarven Burden.

Kobold's don't actually siege though, they just send ambush squads. Do those cause Friendly units of the same civ to turn Hostile? Also, wouldn't any soldier killing a kobold result in them becoming an enemy of the kobold civ and then start attacking the 'bolds that are just loitering about?

Anyway, since that cave leads to at least the first cavern layer, it's only a matter of time until a FB arrives from there to do some rampaging, since the 'bolds will be fair game for them to attack besides your dwarves and livestock.

They'll only turn if the same kobold civ that they are a member of sends hostiles. This will tell the game to make all members of that civ hostile to you, including the itinerants of your fort. It is very possible for a kobold civ different from the one that your fortress kobolds belong to to send attackers. This means that your kobolds will not only fight for you, but never ever become hostile to you (barring you issuing a kill order?).

I found this out when a trio of orc swordsmen who'd massacred one of my old forts helped the reclaimers fight off waves of new orcish attackers after they turned friendly. That fort listed two orc civilizations instead of one.

No, the ambushes don't cause a switch from "Friendly" to "Hostile", even if they're from the same civ, I had several goblin ambushes before the siege that converted them to "Hostile". So I guess living with the Kobolds would be safe, since they don't send sieges.

Yes, any soldier of yours that kills a friendly kobold will become an enemy of their civ, but in my experience with friendly goblins, that doesn't actually do anything. It won't cause your "enemy of kobold/goblin civ" soldiers to spontaneously attack kobolds/goblins that they see. It also doesn't cause the friendly members of that civ to spontaneously attack your soldiers.

I tested that pretty thoroughly when my seven hammerdwarves (5 hammerdwarf, 5 shield user) arrived to reclaim my fortress from 60 goblins, only to find them friendly, and started murdering the goblins one by one, as I gave out the kill orders, until I finally got tired of commanding my dwarves to murder the friendly goblins that massacred the previous fortress and left the remaining friendly goblins in peace (until the siege that made them turn on me). Not one of those starting seven ever attacked a friendly goblin without a kill order being issued, and no friendly goblins attacked them without being attacked first.
