Stronghold 3
« on: October 25, 2011, 12:56:22 am »

..do not buy it.

This will hold as a discussion thread for those who want to have one. My self, I just want to wallow in pity.

Stronghold 3, a "Castle Building Simulator" comes out soon.

I'm looking forward to this one.  Its going to keep me sane while I try to finish Dark Souls.

Meh, I'm not. Stronghold 2 wasn't really as good as the first, mostly because of things like the Gong Pit(why? why would you do that? There's a reason we don't do it in DF, despite the requests to do so). Plus, I really hated Stronghold Kingdoms, with it's pay-2-win.
WHY AKURA. WHY DID I NOT LISTEN TO YOU.

Err, anyways, reasons to skip on the purchase.

  • 4 maps for multiplayer fun-ness. You may make more in the map editor, but vanilla only has four maps in its entirity.
  • There is no guide for hotkeys in the game, or anywhere at the moment. No one has any idea how to speed it up beyond "Slow as hell".
  • Walls, they do nothing! In SH2, pikemen could tear down walls. In SH3, pikemen can ignore walls. They can just reach up with their spears and stab archers on your fortifications.
  • Your escorts move faster than anyone you have, meaning they get to danger before you can.
  • Plagues kill anyone who touch them... and they usually manifest in the most trafficked area. That means you instantly lose everyone in your city.
  • Apple Blights and Mad Cow Disease affect every single workshop of that type, and usually set you behind for a few in game weeks. Note; a half-full granary depletes within one week of normal rations.
  • It's 50$.

I'm told they already have patches for it planned. That's... a lot of things to patch, aye?

I really liked the first one and crusader, was looking forward to this game. . .   :'(
Only thing I could make out from the videos on youtube is that walls (and stuff) look like a pile of styrofoam when hit by a catapult.

I wasn't following development too closely, but I remember feeling happily encouraged when I read (somewhere, and I could be recalling it all wrong) that they were making it more like SH1 than SH2. I must have remembered wrong. Too bad, had hoped this would be a good update to SH1+Expansions.

Edit: From the Steam forums ...
  • No skirmish mode!?
  • Singleplayer is only a tiny campaign!?
On top of everything else, wow. What a massive letdown. Peasants tearing down walls, spearmen killing archers in towers, no computer player or skirmish mode, tiny maps ... not the replayable Stronghold I remember. At all.

They claim they're adding a Kingmaker mode via patch, but ... why isn't it already there? Is the game done or isn't it? Relying on a might-come-someday patch for key features is terrible.

Meh.

Eh, I pre-ordered so there isn't much I can do now.   :P

I don't think I've played SH2, so maybe I'll like it.

I enjoyed the first one, but luckily never got into the ones after that. I'm not quite sure how they messed up the game so badly - Stronghold 1 wasn't perfect, but at least they made an effort to make it a good game. Just looking at the screen shots they had for 3 made me wary of it. It looks awkward and uninspiring, despite the updated graphics, and even those manage to look ugly.

If you want some real Stronghold, get the first one. I'll be sitting out of the Stronghold series for now.

This game is almost an exact copy of 1+2 together.

Regarding the spear men attacking stuff on the walls. They are ranged units now. They throw their spears as well. So put your archers in towers. Their range is increased as well then.

I find the whole UI quite clunky. Especially when targeting enemies. You've got a quite small pixel place just below the enemy unit you need to have the mouse to target it. Which isn't an easy job.
I also haven't figured out how to change the time. Or if it's even possible.

Is this related to Legends, or is that another thing entirely?

That... doesn't really make any goddamn sense. Spearmen, maybe, but pikes aren't exactly something you can(let alone should) lob at someone.

    • Walls, they do nothing! In SH2, pikemen could tear down walls. In SH3, pikemen can ignore walls. They can just reach up with their spears and stab archers on your fortifications.
I don't recall being able to smash stone walls with troops in SH2. Maybe the AI could do it magically, just like they could instarebuild a stone tower two seconds after I destroyed it and have troops marching over the build site, while they spawn 10 Knights out of their castle.

    • Apple Blights and Mad Cow Disease affect every single workshop of that type, and usually set you behind for a few in game weeks. Note; a half-full granary depletes within one week of normal rations.
If I remember correctly, they Blights and Mad Cow Disease did that in the first, but the effect wasn't that bad, especially for Apple Farms, which regenerate in about 5 seconds anyway.

Where did I mention Pikeman? They don't have a ranged attack of course.

I think he means he saw pikemen kill archers on walls without destroying the walls.

I wanted this game, but hearing that the campaign is tiny and the only think to look foward to after ti is multiplayer, I'm not to interested... Sucks though.

Same effect, yes, but they don't grow back after five seconds. Food stocks just... sort of vanish over this short period of time. Because the campaign insists on only giving you one or two sources of food at a time, having all of them gone instantly is disastrous. People don't start dropping dead, but the -30 food penalty can't be offset by generous bribes alone.

I played the original stronghold, but never got around to beating it. It was a pretty good game, how did they make it this bad?

So, how many you have actually bought it and finished it? Because form what I can tell, 1, maybe 2 people have done so (or maybe none at all) and everyone else is taking their word for it.
