Are plants food, or do plants spawn food? We have a very profitable system going on, if we can trade plants for rifles. Additionally, what can we use to build and expand with? Must it be Metal?

Edit: Lastly, are we able to trade now? Or is that just a projection of prices?

You can trade, but they already have plenty of food, so that price has a possibility of dropping sharply after day or two of selling them food.
Yes, Plant is food.
You can build out of plant, but don't expect it to last very long, and it adds no notable defensive value to anything since it'll rot in a few days anyway. Metal is the main building material, yes. if you want to ask around, you might find a smith who'd cost you quite a bit, but might be able to smelt so things down.
