River Creatures die from cold
« on: February 13, 2007, 03:32:00 pm »

As soon as creatures like antmen and lizardmen appear, they start taking cold damage ( or maybe it's fire damage? i can't tell ). All their body parts and organs start out light grey and get worse and worse.

Well, antmen are chasm creatures, but your point remains. Are you on an exeedingly hot/cold map? Have you flooded the world with lava, perhaps? I don't really know what could cause the cave interiors to become dangerously hot or cold, really...

The world is not of an unusual temperature, the dwarves like it just fine. I believe the problem is just that some of the creatures in the creature_subterranean.txt file do not have a [HOMEOTHERM] set.

When i tried making an antman fortress, all my antmen immediately died. I added a [HOMETHERM] to their creature entry, and they worked fine.

Another lil temperature related note, horses have the same temperature properties as iron apparently. hehe!

Yeah they don't have a homeotherm for a reason... They're cold blooded they don't produce much heat. It might be a bug but I remember when I messed around with the fixedtemp 0 stuff all the coldblooded creatures were incapacitated in only a few turns. :D  So yeah they arn't producing heat so your fortress is probably at a weird temp.
Now I wonder what could cause that? You said that when you created an antman fortress they all died? That means it's not just that fortress. Maybe it's the creatures themselves...

Creatures that aren't warm-blooded should still produce heat, they just can't burn energy to keep themselves at an optimal temperature...

The cave varieties of reptiles and so on just need to be modified.  The subterranean environment is ~47F-52F in the game I think, so  the non-homeotherms get down in a dangerous range.  There are all sorts of solutions.  I just haven't gotten there.
