ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Updated information on my afore mentioned war hammer:

The Reward of Denomintations - An iron war hammer that menaces with spikes of Iron and Black Zircon.  It bears an image of a forgotten beast in Sunstone.

I wonder if I'm going to ever accomplish one of my side goals - have a dwarf in full artifact armour and artifact weapons.

You'd almost have to have a specialized fort for that [Eg, farmers all get weapon/armorsmithing, everyone else is conscripted], but it is certainly possible.

Actually, I'd look at preferances, set up a military squad that contains all weapon/armorsmiths with preferences for different arms and armor, then once you get the entire group assembled conscript EVERYBODY else and let them farm/brew until they've all had moods. That'd probably take years though, and I've recently had a bug where activated recruits will still get moods...

This is a black bronze bracelet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with light yellow diamond and encircled with bands of marble.
On the item is an image of Vathsith Watchsearched the dwarf and dwarves in black bronze. Vathsith Watchsearched is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf Vathsith Watsearched to the position of queen of the Controllers of Planning in 143.

The history of a good fortress is not written in blood, it's painted on the walls by the hand of a melancholy orphan.

or you could just have a fortress that lasts a LOOONG time ;P

**Artifacts, contrary to popular belief, survive abandonement. An adventurer could stockpile various weapons and armours into a certain area until the time for embark/reclaim arrived, and hey presto, full set of artifact armour. Or just have the adventure dwarf kill everything in the world that is not bearded and dwarf friendly.

Eh, that'd work, but I'm pretty sure there's a bug preventing removal of artifacts from the fort sites. So for my adventurers, I set up customized masterwork arms/armor instead.

You would only need a few weaponsmiths. All the peasants and such would be trained in one level of armorsmithing.
Hmm, I want to try that now.
