It's not over!  You still got a month to bust him out of the prison (or re-education camp).  I always try for the rescue, even if it gets half my squad killed, including the liberal that was rescued.

Wow, they must have been pointing nukes at the courtroom or something. :P

I would, if he weren't my only.

Dethsquads took care of my other one really quickly...

Your backup just needs to have good Disguise and Security; that's about it. An orange jumpsuit is easy to make. Have him bluff his way in and back out again. And he's got three months to train the necessary skills, too. If you're lucky enough to get arrested rather than killed, there's usually a way out.

At one point, I had recruited a single Child Worker when my founder was arrested and sentenced to death during a failed kidnapping. The kid took a few months to skill up disguise and security and sprang the founder from prison--pretty impressive for a nine-year-old.

Nono, at the time of the sentencing, he was literally my last member of the crime squad, minus sleepers.

You do have a point--how do we not have rigged trials at C+? I mean, we've got death squads roaming the streets, going judge-jury-executioner on you... but if you get into the courtroom, you can talk the jury into acquitting you for murder and get off scot-free! There ought to be more of the show trial, summary execution going on--you know, "Hey, we had your trial yesterday. We sentenced you to death. Want a blindfold?"

Maybe still let your Liberals have a day to rescue people before they're executed, though. Otherwise there'd be no point in trying to survive the trial.

The trial rigging is mostly represented through the difficulty of winning your case at more conservative levels of law. Hence the situation our dear Putnam found himself in, sentenced to death despite winning over the entire courtroom.

The "crying for freedom" line doesn't guarantee success, though it sure helps; ultimately, the jury can feel your indignation, surge with emotional resonance, weep for your cause, and then recover themselves and send you to death. An example is in the movie Trial And Error, in which a con artist is allowed to tell his sob story and brings the jury to tears, moving the entire courtroom with his eloquent appeal. They then proceed to convict him anyway, because, you know. He made a good speech. But he was still guilty.

I had interesting luck by pleading guilty a few times. I had my team of hackers in C+ get arrested in a siege, and just to try and end the game I pleaded guilty for all of them. Four of them were let off with a warning, one was sentenced to 5 months in jail and another was sentenced to death, all for the exact same list of crimes.

I guess even in C+ society there is still the will in the judicial system to at least go through the motions of a legitimate trial. The legal system is probably one of the most difficult institutions in the USA to change, or there is just not the political will to alter it much, besides republicans bringing up tort-reform ideas every once in while.

Not sure what the Death Squad guys are exactly, since there are still regular police here and there that will arrest you. Are they like some vigilante/ paramilitary/ armed wing of a political party type organization that is just sort of tolerated or do high school graduates go to the police station and just apply for Death Squad Officer vacancies?

The Death Squads has to be at least semi-illegal, due to the whole "murder is a crime punishable by death" mess. Considering they come into existence when Police Regulation is at C+, it's probable that the Police are secretly violating the law they are told to uphold.

No matter how biased the court system gets, there is still a judge and jury.  Even if it's a military tribunal or a show trials, the judges might have a change of heart.  One of the interesting wrinkles of American history is that that same chief justice who wrote the majority opinion on the infamous Dread Scott case wrote the majority opinion on the celebrated Amistad case.  Court cases are just naturally unpredictable.

Sengbe Pieh aka "Joseph Cinque", you are found guilty of 2 counts of murder, mutiny, not being white, interfering with interstate commerce and loitering.
Joseph Cinque pays $100 to hire liberal sleeper agent John Quincy Adams
6 of the justices are slave owners
The Spanish are given assurances of a favorable verdict before the prosecution even finishes his opening remarks!
John Quincy Adams has the bench crying for freedom!
Sengbe Pieh you are found...
Not Guilty!

They come into existence when Police Regulation and Death Penalty are at C+. And that is why I think they are entirely legal in the Nightmare. Police are given the power to apply for Death Squad status, becoming judge, jury, and most importantly executioner, since they have so much power. After all, would the police lie about a criminal's intent? Of course not. Obviously allowing the summery execution of un-american socialist criminal scum on the spot helps society by reducing the cost of holding an expensive trial in the overly-liberal court system to that of a single M16 round.
