Journal of the Goatgod_pan.  Shaman.

As midsummer approached I surveyed a more stable fortress. The palisade was all but complete. The well was legendary, and few complained as much. I had built a burial complex and put the spirits of our bretheren to rest. Perhaps most importantly: I restored booze to the fortress.

Then I dug below and found it.  A structure carved from unspeakable, unworkable rock I had only heard of.  The whispering of the shambling dead. Penguin men! Rotting penguin men! I do not know if the thought of sentient penguins is endearing or terrifying, but these penguin men are definitely terrifying.

I quickly sealed off the cursed place.  Inside a hollow stalagmite overlooking the site, I built a room for myself. Here I shall watch the horrors and ensure they do not draw close.

A dwarf was possessed by an ancestral spirit.  He took the mason shop with all the bones and instantly started without ever leaving.  Curious.

digging deeper yet we struck the magma sea.  Even as our miners dug the space for our forges screams came from the distant surface.  A Vile force of Darkness has arrived!

up next: Is the wall finished? What is up with those bones in the mason shop? Who will die?  Will goatgod_pan get his wish of carving the bones and totem of the three-eyed scorpion in the cavern lake?

I ran to the surface, surveying the site.  A murder of goblins (a group of goblins, like a group of ravens or crows, is properly known as a "murder"--as a group of dwarves: a "bearding"), gathered on the northern horizon lead by a thin, muscular hammermaster.

I noted with horror an unfinished section of wall--"quick" I screamed "seal that up!"

I saw with trepidation that the fool fisherdwarf was sealing himself away from the fort and along with the goblins.  To my growing horror he quickly and cheerfully ran from the sealed wall towards...oh Armok...a second hole, this one right near the goblins.

I ordered it to be sealed, checked soundly, found another hole and had that one sealed as well.  Seconds later the goblins moved in milling, just where the gap stood a second ago.

At that minute, the possessed dwarf completed his artifact. It was called "The Spirit of Waving" a one-humped camel bone chain.  I put it by the fort entrance, tying a tiger to the chain for aesthetics.

The rest of the summer was spent under siege and sealed in.  I took the time to oversee the creation of a tree farm, while a peasant declared herself mayor and claimed the mayoral quarters I had ordered created.  Perhaps it is for the best.

The military began to train nicely, sparring became frequent.  For some reason I couldn't get the archers to train.  I joined the squad myself under Anderz v. 2, but even I would do nothing.  It was only by the fall that I realized the sore shortage of backpacks in the fort--2 total--made archery almost unthinkable.  If that seems confusing, have another drink!

Meanwhile the production of steel ran up against a charcoal and wood shortage. Iron will do for the moment nicely. In the meanwhile I reorganized the squads, under a simple principle--you can never have too many shields and archers should wear metal, like real dwarves.

The new squads were aptly named:

The melee is "Exaltation of Roads": for they celebrate the roads that bring them goblins to carve
The archers are "The Named Artifacts" for they protect the creations of the clan.

I also realized that the captain of the guard was a suspect dwarf, as he was also posing as chief medical dwarf.  The forts actual doctor was apparently told to be a hauler.  I rectified these errors.  We missed the dwarven caravan, but the siege left and by winter's beginning I had all but finished a functional dodge-em trap.

Sure the second pathway was unfinished, and lacked a trap.  The first pathway (the one on the right proved its effectiveness swiftly).  When midwinter and anguished cry of "snatcher" disturbed me from my meditations, I was surprised to find five or six recently dead goblins.  Most had...not so much fallen as exploded.

To my horror the next thing I heard was our legendary mechanic.  She was outside.  She had discovered an ambush.

Tomorrow: will our legendary mechanic survive?  Will I figure out how to post screen shots and the save? We will find out!

Incidentally: can I sign up to play another turn later? I've gotten attached to the little inn of drowning.

P.s.  I think we should retitle the thread "Inn of Drowning" as the fort name is more badass than small group succession game

p.p.s. Is it 1 year turns or 1.5?

What happened to Anderz v2?

As far as I know he was one of the only 3 military dwarves [being in the guard].

Also, HOW CAN YOU NOT DENY THE EFFICIENCY OF SALT????!!?

And the crap tons of above ground farms you saw were the farms I set up to make booze, and it's good to hear that my breweries have been put to good use. I tell you the state the fortress was in when I got it was... Not splendid.
Update on named dwarves?
Update on military?
What about hospitals?

I think we can safely declare this succession fort a success, in the sense we haven't died yet.

Almost done with year, will post update tonight.  I lost one man: ironically, named: "Possessed dwarf" to a possessed dwarf--he didn't finish something leather.  Anderz v. 2 is fine, still leading the archers.  Current melee militia leader got four kills and a cool title.

I am considering destroying 80% of the farms, since otherwise we will need to continuously produce rock pots to store endless amounts of random plant food and, only if lucky, booze.

P.s. breweries? I found only 1...

Can one of you guys pls advise me as to the best way to acquire and post screens.

I also reopened the cavern with the Forgotten Beast...word to the wise

That possessed dwarf was the dwarf I was using >_>

Wait a leather maker beat a military dwarf? That's a first.
Also, try [fn] [prt] (or the equivalent), paste it to paint, then upload it to an image sharing website, before adding it here ^-^

As for the breweries... There should be 4....

Also, lovely picture, needs spoilers (and more blood) xD

It was morning on the surface palisade
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The mechanic Cerol was supposed to set the second trap on the walkway of agile doom (or gravitational demise, it really wasn't settled yet) when goblins appeared  right beneath the stairway. Initially the goblins appeared in pieces and showers of viscera, so Cerol was unconcerned as she approached.  However when she reached the walkway the ambush became apparent.

Cerol ran, dodging a mace goblin's first strike, but catching a morningstar on the arm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Her fat saved her.  She sprinted to a safe distance, while her pursuer turned to meet the militia.
The militia, though unskilled, was lead by brave Asen Lashlobsters.  Her skill as a miner was well known and she fought wearing three shields, a silver hammer and an iron pick.  Limbs flew. Teeth gnashed. the Spike of Veiling decimated the remaining goblins. Asen came to be known as the Spike of Veiling for her ferocity.

Lulled by the success of our brave troops, I gave the order to break into the cavern. I wanted the bones of the scorpion spirit guide.  I had realized that the signs relating to our fortresses destiny were revealing themselves earlier in the year, as our first, most hated enemy--a giant toad, was harnessed and bound by a possessed mason who wove a chain from her bones and the bones of other creatures.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perhaps it was that success that lead to the greatest tragedy to strike our fort in my term.  I should have listened to  Loud, known as the Possessed dwarf.  Surely he of all dwarves would know of the ways of dwarven art and madness. A leatherworker wouldnt begin.  Wouldn't start.  He had stopped speaking in early winter or later fall.  He drew and sketched. Rock bars--he had metal bars--iron! He had blocks too, rock blocks just in case that was what he meant.  He wanted bones--he had bones!  All animals that could, went under the knife! He wanted gems, I cut onyx and chrysoberyl.  Nothing.  In the end he just began screaming in a kind of animal rage.  Most ran.  Loud, the Possessed Dwarf rushed to fight him, but suffered a quick broken bone.  When the militia came upon the leather worker (may his name be striken from our records, though he be buried near you Loud), his hands had crushed the Possessed Dwarf's skull.

R.I.P. Possessed Dwarf
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This tragedy shook my resolve, and I decided to pass leadership when spring time came. However problems are cowards: they travel in packs.

Checking last reports, I realized even as the winter months closed, that iron production had slowed once more.  To my horror I realized I was not cautious enough (or perhaps I'd smoked a bit too much rat weed, prior) with my mining designations. I flooded our surface mine.  All that nice iron ore is currently filling up with water. Fortunately the main fort is in no way threatened at the moment.  Future overseers will be well advised to exploit the "new reservoir" as a ready made source for a drowning trap. Or just pump it out and get that ore!

The tree farm is very small, i meant to make it more of a statue garden

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The shrines are very basic, but at least we honor the gods somewhat. The putrid drool's platform is incidentally made of iron, in case you need it in a hurry:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, the well and the hospital are my proudest achievements.  Watching a miner strapped into a traction bench to fix a multiple fracture, ignored for over 2 years, it just warms your beard.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, myself: I ask for nothing other than my room (its on the level with the demonic fortress), my tomb (its the one with the different gods), and my favorite food:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I keep waiting for the scorpion to come for me, but that shall be  in the hands of another overseer.

Seriously though, mind the harmless surface mine flood doesn't accidentally become a whole fort flood and kill the f.b, it should be a pushover.  The trap on the surface needs finishing. The militia is training in the room right by the trading post, I drafted a few more newbs to fill it out and set the train to 7/10, they'll be badass by next year. Once the archers have backpacks they should train too, we just always need arrows, ore and wood. I also highly recommend removing the floors over the river outside our wall--as archers become more useful, the stream should prove to be a great strategic resource.

Thanks for all the advise with the images and the amazing artwork!

However it is definitely stuck, it seems like I am always unzipping things, but never zipping them up, so I have no idea how to go about it. In hind sight, that last sentence is full of suspect innuendo. I am going to get a coffee and do some rl work and see if it finished zipping the file.  I'll keep trying later :(

not saying im taking a turn or anything, but i did check out the save, and The Array is MOSTLY STABLE :D provides an almost continous stream of 700-1300 power output (the power you can use, it produces about 2200, uses 1200). Unfortunately, the methods required to start it up are very unwieldly and inconvenient (need to dump water somewhere, the other 4 channels was barely enough)
next turn im gonna make a kickstart device for it, so those whose computers can't handle it, can shut it off with the peace of mind that it will be easy to restart later :)
