Do whatever the hell you want (except purposely ruin the fort) but, in this one at least, you only get a 3 day turn.
And heres my update:

Excerpt from the Journal of Jilladilla

1st of Hematite
I suppose a status report would raise morale a tad, I would feel better being reassured that I wasn't going to starve soon

5th of Hematite
Opened up the caverns to get some more wood.
Some dwarves went to pick up some already chopped down fungiwoods, and they went right past a Cave Croc...

Amazing it didn't attack...
Nevermind, Tun Bercatten, a leatherworker of little note, got his head bitten off... Oh well he deserved it, he thought it was a good idea to climb over the croc...
Funny how the croc ran away from the rest of the haulers...
Just to charge back and slaughter a ram... Well one less pet is a good thing, in the long run...

The Cave Croc in question was dubbed "Inchrise" by the dwarves... I don't think I should ask why...

20th of Hematite
A migrant wave has arrived today, i hope there's some useful dwarves

a replacement leatherworker...
a miller who has some experience building siege engines
ANOTHER leatherworker... barely need one...
a mason/engraver, he'll prove useful
a carpenter, she came with an axe though?
a fisherdwarf... like we need more of those...
a hunter... shame she's only a competent marksdwarf...
A HIGH MASTER ARMORER... I am just stunned at this...

And that was the wave, I am content with it, 42 dwarves now

6th of Malachite
I, growing slightly paranoid have ordered the lake to be walled off from the rest of our base...

20th of Malachite
We're running out of safe wood to grab... Might have to settle for The Array being 1/6-1/3 finished for now...

27th of Malachite

STOP BOTHERING ME WITH YOUR IDIOTIC FEARS OF HARMLESS ANIMALS!!!

10th of Galena
Iton, one of our leatherworkers has been possessed... its a shame for him

18th of Galena
Dodok our insane woodcrafter has finally died from thirst... I have ordered a coffin to be built for him...

2nd of Limestone
Autumn already? well the digging of The Array finished today, now all thats left to do is to build those damn waterwheels...

9th of Limestone
A draltha got behind our walls... How? Don't ask me...

15th of LimeStone
One of the dwarves ran to me, screaming "THERES A GIANT SCORPIAN THING RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!1!!one!"... I shouted at him "WE MANAGED TO SEAL THE DAMN CAVERNS FROM ANY GROUND OR WATER ATTACKS EXPCEPT FROM THE SOUTH, IT'S COMING FROM THE EAST, WE ARE COMPLETELY SAFE!!!"

I seem to be right, as for now the great "Stospdab" does not sense a path to us...

21st of Limestone
The pumps and floodgates of The Array are in place, all we need is a bridge to control the intake chute and it SHOULD technically work... once the existing wheels are linked up...
Iton the leatherworker showed extreme misery, misery to the point of insanity... Mumbles stuff about there being no hope.

15th of Sandstone
Work on the previous overseers projects have continued... well most of them... Can't let Stos in...

18th of Sandstone
Sent Anderz in to kill the draltha that somehow got past our walls...
Damn thing bit his finger off!

28th of Sandstone
More migrants

a high master bone carver, pretty nice
a lye maker...
a gem setter.....
a high master furnace op with some hammer skill on the side
a strand extractor...
2 kids, 2 and 3 years old
a beekeeper
an animal trainer... ok i guess?
a blacksmith...

And that is all for now, 51 dwarves now

15th of Timber
The caravan has arrived, and we've made nothing to sell this past year... Well I'll gather what we can spare...

20th of Timber
Kel Workheart, a fisherdwarf, has been oddly secretive lately...
He grabbed a piece of jaguar leather and went to work on... something...

23rd of Timber
They brought wood, 26 logs to be exact, this will allow us to continue on The Array... A bit more...
A goblin snatcher was spotted!!! Oh damn... I knew I should've put up some rudimentery defenses up above!
Another one... and this one near the Array... IF YOU TOUCH THAT I WILL PERSONALLY COME UP THERE, KILL YOU, FIND SOME WAY TO RESSURECT YOU, KILL YOU AGAIN, RESSURECT YOU AGAIN, ENSLAVE YOU, AND MAKE YOU KILL YOU FAMILY!!!!! AND THEN KILL YOU AGAIN!!!

27th of Timber

Well it's not the worst artifact ever...

14th of Opal
The Array is almost ready for a test run... As soon as the river thaws out...

___________________________________________

Thats all for today... hehe just a note that I considered the possibility that The Array will cause a lot of lag, so i set up a system were you can shut off segments of it to reduce lag while still gett power from it.
I won't post full pics of it until I'm either done or my turn is over, although i will post pics showing its output as a teaser :)

A couple f your questions:

We had a mechanic, it's just that he died. To a giant toad. We had a spare pick, which makes a great weapon, so why not give it to Anderz?
And as to the spread-out projects: Yeah, not a great idea, but I had plans for the area! Vague, useful plans! The tower over there being engraved would be a combination wood furnace/ashery/maybe soapmaker's workshop supercenter. Plus, settling the whole cavern would count as my megaproject. If I had had long enough to finish my year.

To the pick part of that: a dwarf can only attack with one of his weapons (as far as I noticed) per turn, he doesn't know how to use a pick that well, as such removing the pick from his loadout should increase his effectiveness... oh btw big update incoming, I just found a snipping tool too btw... been using the export local image thing on the menu of dwarf fortress...
Picks are, due to DF simulating their RL strengths but not their weaknesses, great weapons. It couldn't hurt to train Anderz up in mining, especially since miners tend to kill themselves by stupidity.
...that was my line of thought.

a high master... dyer... SERIOUSLY? WHY DO yoU STILL EXIST? DID THEY SEND YOU HERE FOR USELESSNESS?
a peasent... Well we do need haulers...
...You prefer peasants to high master dyers?

Some dwarves went to pick up some already chopped down fungiwoods, and they went right past a Cave Croc...

Amazing it didn't attack...
Aside from the occasional psychopathic giant toad, animals only seem to ever attack if they have line-of-sight. In that screenshot, they didn't. (Years of D&D have given me more than just impressive arithmetic skills and an encyclopedic knowledge of the rules!)

That dwarf was one tile away from being screwed. Also, that doesn't apply to everything, building destroyers path to your buildings, extra sensory things will beeline for your dwarves, and some don't need to see dwarves at all, they just know where your dwarves are.

umm its not a drowning trap... something much more impressive in my opinion...

umm btw that cave croc did have line o sight to some dwarves, i think it ran there... I think it has personal space issues

28th of Opal
GreatWyrmSilver has been very unhappy lately, though it seems primarily due to cave adaptation...
Also a buzzard got in and attacked her... the wildlife here is so... WIERD!...
She completely lost it when it bit her toe and well this is what came about it...

Remind me not to make her angry... And thats after absolutely no training... GreatWyrmSilver got away with minor bruises.

25th of Obsidian
Asen, our high master furnace op, went all secretive today... hopefully something good comes out of it

26th of Obsidian
A great tradgedy has occured... Anderz was killed by a giant bat today... even worse, the damn thing didn't even get scratched...
Stupid bats...

4th of Grantite

He made an iron table... with no iron?
He also claims to be a legendary miner now... ooook?

10th of Granite
That giant bat that killed Anderz came in and butchered 3 more dwarves... However Andel, our marksdwarf, shot it down with a single bone bolt... BUT WHY DID HE CHOOSE TO GO TO SLEEP RIGHT AFTER?!?
Oh well... It's unconscious, and Asen, our newest legendary miner, is coming to mine out its insides... Please kill it before it wakes up...

11th of Granite
It only took a single strike to the head to kill the dreaded bat Ostarvukrig... WHO NAMES THESE THINGS?

4th of Slate
The resivoir of The Array is being filled today... I hope it works...

8th of Slate
One more migrant wave... I bet there's going to be a lot of them...

a high master glazer.... Well we do need haulers to clean the chutes of The Array before it's activated...
an accomplished diagnoser, well now we'll know how exactly how that deadly Forgotten Beast whatever kills us...
a talented bowyer... WE HAVE 2 HIGH MASTERS! HOW MANY CROSSBOWS DO THEY THINK WE NEED?
a pump operator... shame The Arrays pumps are all automatic...
a soaper...
a furnace op, mildly useful...
a novice gem setter... I DON'T deal in gems!
another hunter! Well we'll be that much safer now!
a lye maker....
a planter who knows how to wield a spear somewhat...
an adequate gem setter........
a shearer... for the mountains of wooly animals I keep around! Oh wait...
a mason...
a novice blacksmith...
a cook
a high master cheese maker... not useful right now, maybe to someone else...
another soaper.....
HOW MANY LYE MAKERS DO WE NEED?!?
a woodcrafter.....

and thats it, 65 dwarves now... too damn many useless dwarves...

13th of Slate
Should've built a drawbridge to dam the river while it was frozen... The resivoir is filling up too damn slowly...

15th of Felsite
Elves have come, i hope they brought plenty of wood

23rd of Felsite
Having no crafts to trade, I order the clothes of the deceased to be brought to the depo

26th of Felsite
Testrun of The Array will probably occur today, while it is not finished, it can, theoretically, function properly...
Damn elves brought no wood again... Or any useful animals for that matter... Commencing testrun then...

27th of Felsite
The testrun has started...

AND IT WORKS!!!

Sorta... I need... more... power... yes... more.....

4th of Hematite
Monom the miller, a widow, gave birth to a boy today.
________________________________________________________

I'm so sorry about Anderz :( I don't know what happened... He was wearing bronze breastplate/helm/high boots and steel greaves, and he had his sword... and well seasonal autosave screwed me over there...
that iron table... he took a masons workshop... we had 0 iron bars at the time too... and it gave him legendary mining... confused? I am too...
No seriously Andel just shoots a bolt at that bat, breaks its arm, and it falls down unconcious and then Andel goes away to sleep... He had bolts...
Oh and btw

Oh don't worry, Anderz isn't going to stay dead yet.

Hey, did you say that the array could generate power.... Dr. Dorfenstein time.

Hey, did you say that the array could generate power.... Dr. Dorfenstein time.
Look at total power needed, thats just for about 1/3 of the constructed wheels and SOME of the pumps(there's 30 pumps)
Yup... I'll bet once this is finished it'll be able to power at least 3 pump stacks from magma sea to surface

8th of Hematite
The Array is being loaded today...

18th of Hematite
The Array couldn't get started! I'm ordering the rear wheels to be moved to the front...
Oh and some possesed dwarf made a plain old artifact iron ring... with actual iron this time...

2nd of Malachite
We are going to attempt to get The Array running today...

power...

I need more power...

I need MORE POWER!

MOOOORRRRRREEEEE POOOOOWWWWWEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!11!!1!one!!

3rd of Malachite
Another forgotten beast came today... we should be safe...

5th of Malachite
Stupid mayor with his stupid mandates... OH STOS WHERE ARE YOU?!?

19th of Malachite
Looks like the mayor made a new friend...

He, the beast, then procceded to stand still for targert practice

1st of Galena
That Forgotton Beast we killed, its toxin appears to produce minor effects... lets just hope they stay that way...
Oh and its corpse weighed a frightening 11917 urists...

3rd of Galena
Some test subj... I mean migrants have arrived...

a high master glassmaker, pretty useful
a weaver...
an animal dissector.......
a peasant with little combat skill
a furnace op
an animal trainer
a talented metal crafter who likes lay pewter... don't know how useful that is, never touched lay pewter, probably never will
an engraver

not the biggest wave but we're sending Nish the animal dissector to investigate the beast...

19th of Galena
The dwarves cleaned up all of the extract left over from the forgotten beast...
However The Array is operational, although its a little unstable at the moment, it needs more water...
____________________________________________________________________

The Array is extremely lagy on my laptop, gonna deactivate the pumps so it can fill up, most I've seen it produce is 3500, keep in mind that between 1/6 and 1/3 of the wheels i wanted to go up, are up
The extract seemed to cause nausua (prolly spelled that wrong), and dizziness and fever later, and blisters after that... at least thats what the friendly neighborhood troll got... before the militia killed it...
Oh btw Stos wasn't killed, he's hanging out in the central lake... yeah... don't know why, he won't go for the bait...

(the rest is complete illegible scribbles... it appears Jilladilla has gone insane here...)

3rd of Limestone, by Shorast Athellisid, Mayor
Overseer Jilladilla went completely insane yesterday, but he seems to have returned somewhat to normal.
He left me his plans on "The Array" as he calls it, and tells me to hand them off to the next overseer in charge, he told me it wouldn't take long.
And with that, he wished us good luck and bountiful minerals, said he had a bridge he needed to construct, and as suddenly as he came, he left.
____________________________________________________

Sorry guys gonna have to end early  :( (well it did start early so...)
But before i pass it off to the next guy, our stocks:

Also as promised here is The Array as it stands, it has great potential, but needs more water to flow in, the lever on the far right raises/lowers the drawbridge currently letting the river in.

Hmm... maybe I have gone insane...

 :o

(It keeps going, theres an island on the other side... and about another screen of ocean in between)
