Best year to embark?

By that I mean, at what point do you stop world generation? I like to stop mine at 49, because it provides time for expansion, and it rounds to 50 when I start the game.

250. Stuff happens, yet everything interesting hasn't been killed off yet.

I don't stop it.  I let it go to the usual (usually, if various other events like increasing numbers of extinctions stop it for me, first) end year.

Something like 1050, on the general world settings (only usually modified for erosion and some aesthetic bits, from the largest natural workgen size), IIRC.

Works for me, but not to everyone's liking I'll bet.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of embarking in year 1 compared to say, year 250 and year 1050?

If you embark year one you can be the first dwarf in the world to kill an elf.

I don't know if you need other ideas when you have magma.

I perfer 250 because in my expernce its alot easyer to find sedimentary layers on a longer world gen. Dont ask why I just do. Maby because I Belive that DF makes it so that sedimentary layers show up as a result of constant erosion :P

Any thoughts on how this can be abused?

Constant, hyper-effective erosion?

Maybe the water has a powerful acid in it...

5. I just hate waiting for world gen. Besides, there isn't much history, so engravings will be mostly about your fortress and not some random dipshit elf dying to a troll.

I go with 100, for a nice mix of having megabeasts still alive and a bit of history. I find 100 is usually enough to ensure I don't end up with endless engravings about the masterwork cat tallow roast someone ate.

5 has no kobolds, they all starved to death last year.

If the DF-mode megabeast attacks include properly aged dragons, going to year 1000+ definitely will provide bigger, stronger dragons when they decide to invade.

I generally set out in the early Spring so there's plenty of feed for the cattle and it just makes getting to Oregon a lot easier in generally, really.

Oh wait, wrong game.

Depends on my mood.  Sometimes I go around the double-digits, other times I let it run for a millenia or two
