First impressions: I enjoyed it. Rarity central plot and character development for her relationship with her younger sister makes me happy.

But did you find her likable? Because I didn't. I've been one of the strongest supporters and fans of Rarity on this board for about the past 100 pages of pony threads. But I didn't like the Rarity presented in this episode.

From a fan perspective I was saddened by the Derpy/Dinky relationship weakening

By far the best part was the strength of
Applejack's representation in this episode.

Agreed. The fact that we both agree that Applejack was the best part of an episode about Rarity, kind of shows that Rarity was not portrayed very well here.

An excellent episode for the shows intended target audience in the younger age bracket, it was informative and educational on one of the biggest issues that face that demographic, sibling disharmony.

And this, unfortunately, I also agree with. And was thinking similar while watching it. Like (kaijuu?) said a page or two back, the whole thing comes across as a forced aesop. It's predictable, and not very well written, and just simply not very much fun to watch.

I don't want to watch a show that's informative and educational for 8 year olds. I want to watch a show with interesting, well thought out characters who engage in fun, funny and enteraining adventures.

The show used to be like that. Recently...not so much.

I couldn't put my finger on what was bugging me, but "forced aesop" nails it. And I realise that this show is primarily intended for kids, and that my enjoyment of it out in the periphery demographic is a happy set of coincidences caused by good writing and interesting characters. But since when does "for kids" mean a complete lack of subtlety? Kids aren't stupid, and picking up on emotional responses from their surroundings is kind of what they do. Oh my gods and little fishes; that scene where Rarity finds Sweetie's painting. It could have been powerful. Instead, we get hammered over the head with the fact that RARITY IS VERY SORRY FOR BEING THOUGHTLESS AND MEAN TO HER SISTER, GET IT? I would have loved to see Tabitha St Germain's face when she first read the script. Or when she recorded the lines, for that matter. "Okay, Rarity is pretty hammy normally. Now dial it waaaaaaay up!"

Considering it... how long do you figure Rarity stayed down there?  Since before everypony showed up to the festival?  Its more then likely that the Apple sisters and Rarity set up a little alcove... a comfy one under that mudpit somewhere. 
As for enough oxygen to last a pony for... how many hours?  Assuming Rarity got down there as soon as people started to trickle in for the competition thing? Perhaps 3-4 hours at most... 
Well, heck if I know how that works.

Hey, I hope this gives a certain someone out there an idea for a drawing. Applejack. Wetsuit. Diving. All my money.

As for Rarity and Applejack staying under that mud for long - well, exactly how often do you think anyone would pay attention to mud? It's not the focus of the race, not to mention not the most eye-pleasing thing to look at. They both could have been coming up for air every minute, or just plain sat there with their mud-covered noses just above the surface, and nobody would so much as notice.

I think I'm going to keep watching season 2 simply because I am a mild fanatic. They seem to be getting better with the show fairly rapidly anyway. Hopefully, by the episode after next we'll be back up to season 1 quality.

Judging by the next couple of episodes, I have to agree with...whoever it was upthread: Looks like the new Powers That Be are trying to find their feet by singling out a few main characters for each new episode, rather than do full ensemble scripts at once. The next two look to be focused on Rainbow Dash, and then another Rarity episode.
