I dunno. This episode got a resounding meh from me, much like Lesson Zero. What is it with this season and turning main characters into single-note personalities? It feels like lazy writing to me. Like they can't come up with anything solid, so they go for the cheap laughs by dialing up a personality trait beyond the point of parody. Eh...perhaps it'll grow on me.

To be fair, Rarity wasn't nearly as OOC as either her or Twilight in Lesson Zero. The expressions started to piss me off, but then they largely stopped them after a certain point. Not 'great' by any means, but better. I think Lauren Faust might have had an even larger hand in the writing than we thought, and this is a sign that the writers are literally trying to figure out how to write the characters on their own, and are simplifying personalities (hopefully, dear gog) temporarily while they get on their feet. Still nowhere near the 'average' quality of a S1 ep, but getting closer. If the next episode shows as much improvement over this as this did over LZ, I think I'll be happy knowing that they're on the right track.

On another note, I seem to get the impression that their parents live with Sweetie Belle in their own house, and were just visiting/dropping her off...? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that fits well with what I was expecting. And honestly, the frustration and Rarity's reactions weren't very OOC for her, as we've already seen that she can ignore the feelings of ponies close to her when she gets caught up in the moment, or when they are disagreeable to her (Sonic Rainboom, slumber party), and that she places high importance on things being just so. I think they captured her personality fairly well, even if the episode itself was a bit bare-bones compared to the earlier, better ones.

Yeah the implication seems to be Rarity's parents live somewhere nearby with sweetie bell, probably in Ponyville or somewhere on the outskirts. Close enough that Sweetie bell can go to school in ponyville/etc, while far enough away to explain why we haven't seen them before (like we see granny smith).

I'm generally in agreement with most of the spoilered comments. Episode 5 was not awful, but not great. Signs of bad writing and one dimensional characterization. Return of off-model art, but not as bad as Lesson Zero. During season 1, Rarity was one of my favorite ponies. For this being an episode with her in the focus, she didn't seem very likable. This isn't an episode I'm likely to ever watch a second time.

Possibly to shut down the speculation that Sweetie Belle is her daughter, even though it was stated fairly clearly in season 1.

Anyway, on a different topic, I notice that references were made to pigs on Applejack's farm again. And some were even shown. I have a question. Chickens make eggs, cows make milk...what use is there for pigs on a farm other than eating them?

Truffles. I believe more than one fanfic mentioned this, as well. This is an established use for pigs in our world that involves raising them without bacon at the end.

Actually, I sort of think that this little series of episodes that are focusing on one of the Mane Six and their sister or Scootaloo might have been deliberately designed to allow the writers to practice one or two of the 6 without having to worry about characterizing the others properly at the same time.

Edit for information. Now imagine if the pigs were intelligent enough to find and possibly dig up and transport truffles on their own, in exchange for what amounts to room and board (with the added bonus of, as Dsarker mentioned, fertilizer). Seems like a handy way to add a bit of extra profit on the side, and the climate fits.
