Always expect the worst, in any endeavor you take on.

But of course, I am looking through the legends right now to find out what happened to those hamlets.

DO NOT embark for the first time on an aquifer

 Use http://df.magmawiki.com/ often

Use the find function (f on the world map) to find a desirable biome.

You can seal off your fort from the outside until prepared to deal with sieges if need be with a few constructed walls.

Don't give up after your first fort.

I would not bother with the hamlets unless they have favorable conditions anyway (Clay, flux, multiple metals, etc.)

 Strike the earth!

Find a volcano, they're really great for the metal industry.

Don't embark on a volcano first.  You'll get spoiled.

Are they set to do so? Press v -> p -> l, make sure the cursor's on a miner, and see if they have mining enabled.

How do I get them to move into the fortress? Also they are just leaving wood where it drops.

Get Dwarf Therapist.  It's a lifesaver.

"Stuff" gets put into stock(p)iles.  If there's no appropriate stockpile for a good it just sits around unless used to build something.

To have them move in, first make sure you set your stockpiles (a basic one that holds everything would be fine for emptying your wagon) and take down the wagon with q -> x. Then set a meeting area with i. they seem to wander aimlessly without a place to meet, so it's probably best to do that.

But if there is a meeting area they make friends (and sometimes grudges) which make sieges so much more Fun
