Question:Will unthawed streams flow?
« on: October 20, 2011, 11:05:05 am »

I'm in a permantly frozen embark with two streams and a nice waterfall. But they are frozen. If I run magma along the entire course of the streams underneath will they thaw and flow again? On the input side of the stream will I need to make the lava flow off the map to be able to thaw the beginning flow of the stream?

I want to make paradise in a frozen wasteland, and I'm hoping if the streams are flowing again, fish will come. Plus it seems fun.

You need to thaw both the beginning and the end of the river, which might actually be impossible since you can't dig the map's borders

Yes - you will need to carve fortifications into the map edge to do this, which will only be possible if you have only a single soil layer (and the tiles immediately underneath the river are stone). This is more difficult than it was back in 40d since magma will actually flow off the map, meaning you'll have to constantly add more magma to the system to prevent it from drying up.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You'll also get endless cave-in spam and/or lockups as the waterfall freezes at the brook's edge and either sticks there or falls down.  Due to heating issues, you can't exactly keep water warm as it changes Z levels, there's just no place to fit the magma!

Actually scratch that, I -think- you can heat water from above, by constructing a floor and then pouring magma atop it.  You might be able to get a stairstep of water going to transport liquid water from top to bottom, but the waterfall itself will never be.
