But surviving CAN be fun. If you had a moment of "they're not going to make it" prior to surviving.

Also, I forgot that this game existed. Although last time I heard of it it was still only a gameplay-demo video. Now alpha? Time to waste some time today, hooray!

Not surviving is fun. Barely surviving is really fun. Any more success than that is boring.

This is a  very good opinion to have.
As for SoR... well, I tried the demo and could do little more than dig and slaughter pigs. A simplified, 2D DF might, of course be fun.
And the sprites are beautiful :P

These are the dudes that straight up stole the DF theme song Tarn composed/recorded and then tried to say it was an 'homage'.   Toady asked 'em to stop using it and they eventually relented.  They look like they're capable of producing good work though, as I've said before, albeit fairly derivative.

It is good to see derivative games, maybe some day, somebody will make something better? But it is extremely unlikely that we will see this in next 10 years.

*hachnslay looks at thread topic* - a new indie game ...
*hachnslay looks at board name* - Dwarf Fortress ...
*hachnslay points somewhere* - other games
seriously, the inhabitants of that board might enjoy the game.

I wish Toady could trademark the name "Dwarf Fortress"

In their front page: "Dwarf Fortress for the every man"

Fuck them.

So, terraria + dwarf fortress = this.
Needs more work, but hey, it could be like the Terraria and MineCraft thing: neither win, both are good.

This looks extremely similar to a game called king arthurs gold actually, but that's PvP.

think toady should put a donations part so we can eventualy donate cash for him to trade mark dwarf fortress? That way, he wont have to worry quite so much or deal with people doing stupid shit wihtout asking permission.

Mind, i dont have problems with inspiration etc. :P just be nice to know someone else isent going to rain on toadys parade.

I've been following 'em on Twitter since their whole music borrowing ordeal, and I'll simply say that they post triumphantly about getting animations to work right, and units to move around right.  That should assuage some people's fears about them unseating anyone as a serious contender.  No one has anything to worry about until their bugs get anywhere near as insane as DF's.

What I don't like is people selling their game as "Dwarf Fortress inspired", "Dwarf Fortress-like", using the name of Toady's work to sell their own.

Indie developers are worst in their practices than great publishers. You will never see EA advertising Battlefield 3 as "Modern Warfare-like".

No joke some recent jet fighting game I saw an ad for prominently displayed a critic blurb of "Like Modern Warfare with planes" or something.   But yeah, it's really awful for an indie group to be so disrespectful to the thing they're apparently trying to pay tribute to or rope in the fanbase of.

"Like Modern Warfare with planes" is not the same "copy of Modern Warfare with easier gameplay"
