Patterns!
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:35:15 pm »

I've decided my next fort will be a honeycomb fort, with repeating hexagons octagons (apparently I can't count past 6) EVERYWHERE! Unfortunately I cannot fit 6 8 hexagons octagons around a central hexagon octagon without a walkable path being created, so I have come to you, wise forum goers, to help choose the pattern I shall use.

I'm using this simple pattern:

And thinking of tiling it like this:

or

or perhaps a neater version of:

What do you all think?

You can also use this thread to share your favourite patterns for your forts- be it bedrooms, catacombs, intricate hallways or whatever... I just love seeing interesting patterns. Bonus points for screenshots of your favourites! :)

I usually end up with circles, but looking at these I'm curious about doing more modular patterns.  I'd increase that octagon either way, so you could fit 4 workshops and a central staircase per unit.  See how that fits into pattern designs.

The last one is my favorite - it has the least amount of wasted space.

I really like it! All of my most recent forts have had some kind of pre-planned layout, or at least some kind of unifying aesthetic.

All of these pictures are only one layer, though. What's your vertical layout?

Hmm, good idea about expanding each cell, I'll have a look and see what I can come up with.

Vertically I was thinking of layering them, but leaving some open to the level below, some with a sort of stepped pattern, and potentially running water through some of them for aesthetics and mist. There's no reason that a central shaft (such as in the last one) could be left open down to a garden level below, while still maintaining a cell pattern.

I think to make a proper beehive style, it needs an offset per level.  Like, one layer one way, and then the next layer is designed such that the stairways still line up but the pattern is slightly rotated or moved over.  This would create interesting branching and swerving designs that any adventurer would hate!

Model them after LoZ dungeons. I like this one myself:

If I use something like the last pattern I could have the double line alternating between levels...

If only I weren't in a lecture I could experiment right now!

edit- that said, it doesn't stop me from posting here....

You may not be able to make perfect hexagons within a square grid, but the more octagonal you make them, the more wasted space you will have between rooms.  Hexagons are tessellations, and octagons are not.  It is entirely possible to have 6 hexagons surrounding a central hexagon, and to repeat this patter on and on.

It's Raving's tileset, which is a combination of some others, available here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset_repository#Raving

It's basically default with slightly different walls. I love it for making diagonal walls look good.

Hmm, thanks for that! I'll have to test that out. The reason I went with the pattern in the original post was because I love the octagon in this tileset, it just looks so neat, but I will try a hexagon.
I didn't even bother to count the sides of my own shape, how embarrassing...

I personally use Phoebus with the old style walls.  Phoebus's new curved walls are shit.  The old diagonal walls are orgasmically aesthetic and make me love my elaborate forts~  I can pass my curses.png thing, it's identical to the most recent Phoebus just with the old wall styles tacked on instead.

I like hexagons/octagons too :)

I was experimenting with decorating them a bit though, trying to get more interesting shapes. Unfortunately I can't make an entire fortress look like that, because of terrain and mineral features...

So here are my dining room and barracks:

I've had a play with some of the more hexagonal patterns:

A smaller version:

And a teeny tiny version I could use for hauler's bedrooms or tombs!

Although these patterns are pretty neat, for some reason I still really like the octagon in the original post. I'll have to keep playing around and try to perfect some sort of theme :).
